My mom got one before trading it in for her Rover last year. She wanted the Q7 but got the 5. She thought the 5 was a little "jerky" but she is a pretty twitchy driver.

I really liked it. I took it on a road trip to Memphis.
Dude, she's the same way.  She constantly micro-corrects.  Drives me nuts so i try not to dwell on it.   I'm in the "focus on infinity" camp and rarely adjust the steering.  Of course all bets are off in my car with crosswinds.
I didn't know the steering wheel even rotated in your car.  I thought it was a straight shot to work and back, zero turns to give.
...unless your mom is riding shotgun, then i tend to weave around for some reason...
Gee Carey.  That's kind of a... low blow.
Nothing to be ashamed of, probably why John In Carolina Senior is always mr happy.

I don't have the Q5....but I recently drove it before I bought an MDX.  Like the X3 and several other "SUV's" that I tested....I failed to understand why I would buy a truck-like vehicle which offers no reasonable cargo space!?  Obviously I am a minority...since these vehicle types sell like hot cakes.

I came from a VW Sportwagen diesel....which was the best investment I ever made....since VW bought it back from me 3.5 years and 42,000 after I had purchased it...for $1K less than my original purchase price (in that dieselgate fiasco).

I really desired a true 'wagon' so I could have a sedan-like drive along with the cargo space....but in this country....again I am in the minority.  The Audi All Road has barely enough space in the boot for my groceries...and the little Q3 and Q5 aren't much better.  The Volvo XC70 was my top pick.....but I didn't want to spend the money and my dealer (only one volvo dealer in my city) is questionable.

I found a 2016 MDX with 5,000 miles at the Porsche dealer for a steal. Theguy leased the MDX...hated it....and traded it for the Porsche SUV.  Thank G-d for people with extraneous income!

The MDX is not sporty....but is extremely quiet, powerful, and comfortable....and has voluminous cargo capacity for my dog and hobbies.  The Q5 is a 'cooler' car that drives much sportier...I liked it a lot...but I could barely fit my dog in that 'SUV'.

I have a 2017 A4 quattro and I've been really happy with it.  There is a slight lag in the transmission when starting from a dead stop, but you can alleviate that by putting it in sport or manual.

    Overall, it's a great car.

Also, the 2017 was the latest redo of the A4 platform, and I think the Q5 gets similar changes for 2018.

I bought the A4 after VW bought back my 2015 Passat.  I bought it new a month before the scandal came out, and I ended up driving it for 2 years and I still cleared about 3K over what I originally paid for it.

Yeah, the Q5 and X3 don't have much cargo space but for SWMBO's purposes, it's enough.  We have a full size pickup if we need to haul big stuff.

I'm impressed with the mileage.  25 overall is significantly better than her X3.

My pickup gets around 14.  The 2900 lb car gets 21 (the way I drive it).

@nolaegghead, my wife has a Q5 and loves it.  She looked at the X3 and the Land Rover LR2 and the Q5 had more space and the style she wanted.  It's been very reliable.

If you want to compare it to another higher end small SUV, look at the new Discovery Sport (replaced the LR2).  I had one as a loaner this Spring and thought it was nice.

A colleague has a Q5 that's maybe 2 years old.  Just had it in the shop for losing power - this has been happening off and on.  30ish k miles.  Had it in the shop, they didn't know what it was, suggested plugs (shouldn't be at 30k) and they kept it for about 3 days, talking to Audi support, etc.  I know she got it back and it seems to be fine.  I don't know what the fix was but I can ask.  She told me she googled the forums with the symptoms she was experiencing and said there was quite a bit of chatter about the same thing, no clear answer what it was though.  I'll ask what the story was.
They say plugs last some stipid long mileage but often don't. My friend runs an indpendent VW / Audi specialist shop and recommends to change plugs at half the Audi interval.

Anne is going over to Audi from Honda, Audi interiors appeal to the girls. I find them wooden to drive and harsh for the S Line, prefer BMW.

Oof. My A3 TDI never had these issues, nor does my A7. I wish we could still get a 5 series wagon here, though. Only options now are a Mercedes E-class and the V90 if Volvo keeps their word on bringing it.

We rented an A6 wagon in Germany on our honeymoon. Awesome ride. It was a bullet.

The 'girls' comment isn't an insult, the interiors are nice and my wife likes nice stuff. Anne has just ordered an A3, but 1.5 petrol not TDI. Now our kids are older she doesn't need a bus any more.

The Q5 is a fantastic car. It drives really well and fit and finish on those cars is the best out there. The Audi Infotainment system (MMI) along with the virtual cockpit is also my favorite on the market currently. That being said, I am a bit of an Audi fan. My last 4 cars have been '08 Audi A3, '10 Audi A5, '13 Audi A5, '16 Mercedes C Class, '18 Audi S5 Sportback, so I am very familiar with the Audi's and the platform.

    Thanks, good info!

I tried talking her into considering the Macon, but with options, it really busts her budget.

Update:  She is buying the Q5.  I found a buyer, one of my friends (Henrik), for the X3.  So good deal for everyone - she's getting more than the trade in any my buddy is getting a 2013 X3 with 45K miles, almost fully loaded in near perfect shape for about 4-5K under street price.  And his sales tax applies like a trade-in.

The one worry I had about the X3 that I fully disclosed was it would smoke during start up for about 20 seconds if it sat for a day or more.  Well, yesterday we got a letter from BMW that acknowledged  an issue with the turbo oil line and they extended the warranty to 10 years, 100K miles for the turbo.  I am 99% sure the smoke is from oil leaking from the turbine bearing.  So a free new turbo to the new owner.  There are no performance issues, but no one likes smoke and it does consume some oil.

Anyway, she will pick the car up on Wed.

So SWMBO just picked up her loan check.  25K.  She will use the trade-in and cash for the balance.  She is funny in she likes to keep her payments under $400/month.  2.3% financing through Navy Federal.  I prefer zero monthly payment which is why I just buy used vehicles with cash.

My wife just picked up the 2018 Q5 a couple weeks ago.  She traded in her 2007 Acura MDX and 2010 Mini Cooper S.  I wish I could say we have the loan payments under $400/month.  But, she just got a nice promotion, and I expect one in about six months.  So, it all works out.   We looked at the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X3, the Lexus RX and the Q5.  The Porsche was an instant no, solely based on the fact that the price tag started with a 7 and had an additional four digits.   I'm not a BMW fan, and she thought that the Lexus's front grill looked like Darth Vader's helmet.  It came down to the Q5 and the Lexus, and we went with the Audi.   The interior wasn't overly busy, whereas the Lexus just seemed to have a weird cockpit setup.  Good mileage, stylish, plenty of zip, drives smoothly.  It's pretty sweet.   Hopefully Mrs Nola digs her new ride!

Funny you say that, Bridget HATES the grill on the Lexus.  Every time she sees one I hear about it.  "yes honey, it's ugly".  I could care less about a Lexus.  I want something more challenging to own.  If Range Rover made a sports car with a 50 mile warranty, I might consider that, for instance.

F Pace R-Sport?   Need to try one of those.

I have an X3 now, and owned BMWs for at least 20 years - along with some Audis, but not a recent model or SUV variant. (My Dad's got a Tiguan though, which is Q3 right?).

Was not impressed with the driving experience of my daughters RR Sport,  in fact I preferred the Evoque she had before.

What about a Maserati Levante?   A (any) bonkers Italian car is on my bucket list.
