The Chicken Ranch Is Up For Sale

After a lot of pondering, mulling, thinking, and even dreading, the Ranch Madam and I have decided it is time for us to re-adjust our lives and move closer to family.

We have lived here for 29 years and now we are facing the final chapter in a wonderful life filled with fun, joy and all the many things that everyone faces in the course of living.

We're still healthy, so there are no health issues forcing us to change. It's more like we want another adventure while we can still enjoy it.

We've found a delightful, over 55 community, called Terra Mariae http://www.terramariae.com/ in the outskirts of Covington, Louisiana, a small town with small town values and a comfortable way of life. But it also offers all of what we want and need in our remaining lives.

Plus, it is only 20 minutes from Judy's sister and husband's new home as they too have reached retirement age.

We've already met both Big Green Egg dealers, and they are well stocked with Big Green Egg items, know how to cook on Eggs and are conveniently located. They will be well visited by us.

We decided to build new instead of buying an existing house because we want our own fingerprints on it from the start.

The house design is decidedly French, as is the popular style in South Louisiana, but it is considered a 'Garden Home' that sets on a zero lot-line. That virtually leaves me nothing to mow. I'm good with that since I will no longer have my International Workforce.

The garden part is professionally designed and planted with easy to maintain bushes to give us a 'garden look' right outside our courtyard style side entrance.

It just felt right for us.

A covered patio is comfortably convenient for relaxing in private. Another uncovered patio area that is actually larger than the Coop, is located near the covered patio. Yes, there will soon be a covered outdoor kitchen, albeit a lot more formal.

The outdoor kitchen (yet unnamed) will be limited to just two Large Eggs, Lulu and Lola, that have volunteered to accompany us, along with the Blackstone Grill which will be incorporated into the counter.

Lily Large did not want to leave the area where she 'free-ranges' so she was adopted by a friendly neighbor who promised to give her just enough chores to keep her happy. In Egg Years, she's now 126 years old, but still looks good and can turn on any manly man. We wish her well.

Shirley Small will accompany us to our new home but will actually live with a neighbor who expressed a strong interest in ceramic cooking. He's helped us with a lot of the leg work of getting the approvals for us to live there. I'm sure his wife does not mind having a 'working Girl' living with them.

It's very likely that Shirley will get together with Lola and Lulu from time to time.

Maggi Mini and Mini-Maxine, along with their accessories, want no part of moving with us and asked to be sold to the highest bidder. They will be fine.

The large accumulation of Chicken Stuff in and about the Coop is being sorted according to whether it will make it there or not. Some of it clearly won't be going with us. We hope to leave the Coop bare of all traces of what went on there for over a decade.

Spa Monkey, wants to remain here to annoy the new owners. What can I say but... Good!!!

As for our involvement in Eggfests, the Space City Eggfest ten days from now will probably be our last as cooks. It has gotten to be too much for us in more ways than one.

We'll pop in here now and then to see what's going on, but the time has come to hang up our spurs.

Oh, and if I come up with any brilliant ideas for something to cook, I may post it on YouTube and post the link here.

For all of those we've met over the years, thank you for accepting us in your ranks. For those we've chatted with on this forum but never met in person, thanks for your comments and help. For those who are new to Egg'n, you are in good hands with many Egghead Friends who are eager to help you enjoy your Egg more than you could ever do alone.

With that, I'll say, ****-a-doodle-doo...

I think what @Photo Egg and I both really meant to say was "good riddance" and "the average IQ of both states is about to go up" - or something like that...

Hey, @Photo_Egg, pass the box of Kleenex this way.  I'm so happy for you, Judy and Leroy, but still sad to set you loose.  I only hope the rest of us Texas Eggheads can carry at least a fraction of the torch y'all carried and taught us.

We are headed west from St Augustine now. Will drive by Covington late this afternoon or early tomorrow.
You will be missed by all my friend.
I did not pick this up but can go back and get it. Place beside your Egg World and name it Lions Den. It says 1513 but can change it to 2017.

Did you visit Abita Lumber? They have a lot of BGE equipment and carry every size of egg, plus they are fun to chat with. That is my go to dealer. Hope to see you there.

  • Good luck LeRoy and Judy. Was a pleasure every time we got together at a fest. I feel like we got out-recruited by an SEC team. 2 five-star recruits headed to bayou country. Sad day for Texas, indeed. I hope to see you down the road.

Sure did, and enjoyed talking to Jim Coffman.  Bought a bag of BGE lump while I was there.  He even suggested we try Abita Cafe for lunch.  That was a wonderful surprise.  REALLY great food.  Lots of history in that little building.

We will be visiting both again.

Ahh Covington.  If the beverage desire hits, try my friends just down the street at Abita Brewing.  Went to college with one of the Brew Masters there and they are a great brewery!  They sit on top of the biggest and freshest spring in the state.  And that Abita Café....... Yum!!!  Maybe ya'll can get then to start egging as well!

Just watch out for the neighbors that swing around on wreckingballs and lick hammers......

Congrats the move.  Covington is a great area, I have family about 10miles from there in Mandeville.  Only issue is Carey will be pretty close ;)

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

    Nooooooo!!!! Say it ain't so.

I was was okay when you said the Chicken Ranch was up for sale. When you said the girls were being disbanded. Even when you said you were leaving Texas...

... But no more cooking at Eggfests after May???

    Now I'm sad.

But still wish you and Judy the very best for your next adventure. Y'all definitely make the eggfest circuit a fun(ner) deal :)

Unlike some others your news today is old information to me as you have been sharing your intentions and plans from a while back. Since we have never met in person, but have spent countless hours accumulated over the years I think we feel like we know each other quite well. Your planned departure from the forums will leave a hole and your chatter and sense of humor will be missed! Once again Pat and I wish you and Judy only the best of the best in your new chapter of life.
