I worked at my University in the labs for all 4 years. Lots of good work. Unfortunately, a lot of the science driving policy descisions at the highest levels (on both sides) is frought with issues and conflicts.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

To "keep food on their plate" ? I know some faculty who do not do research. I hate to break it to you, but they're not starving. The institution provides nine months of salary at most R1 institutions, and for most people, that is more than enough.Ozzie_Isaac said:

As to your second sentence, I don't know of a single lab that operates that way. When another group can reproduce your results, that increases the impact of your work. The incentives for scientists are exactly the opposite of what you seem to think they are.
Scientists are largely driven by... ego. They want to be the first ones to have made a breakthrough in understanding or technology.
