They will let their bias creep in and in some cases do what they need to do to keep food on their plate.

Not sharing data, not sharing processes, and publishing results other labs cannot repeat does not strike me interested in the truth.

To "keep food on their plate" ?  I know some faculty who do not do research.  I hate to break it to you, but they're not starving.  The institution provides nine months of salary at most R1 institutions, and for most people, that is more than enough.  

As to your second sentence, I don't know of a single lab that operates that way.  When another group can reproduce your results, that increases the impact of your work.  The incentives for scientists are exactly the opposite of what you seem to think they are.  

Scientists are largely driven by... ego.  They want to be the first ones to have made a breakthrough in understanding or technology.  And they want to publish papers in the best journals so that their work is highly cited and their h-index (basically a third leg) grows and grows.
