    Mythbusters did a segment that "proved" that bullets fired in the air can not kill you. The problem is, they dropped the bullet from a balloon, and showed that a bullet coming down at terminally velocity is going too slow to harm you. If someone fires a bullet straight up, they're correct. But we all know that is seldom the case. I wonder how many people saw that and now figure it is safe to fire into the air?

    I'm guessing the intersection between the set of people who watch "Mythbusters" and those who would think to shoot a gun off into the air in the first place is pretty friggin close to zero.  In fact, it might just be you.

    They also CLEARLY stated that a ballistic trajectory is the big issue. And that bullets are rarely fired straight up


    they never said a bullet fired in the air wouldn't kill you.

    True, but new people are tuning into the show the all the time, plus some are not paying full attention. No doubt many viewers came away thinking that it is ok to shoot firearms in the air. Yes, the show said everything they needed to say, I just believe it added to the problem.

    30 cal terminal velocity of a bullet fired straight up is 300 feet per second.  About what a cheap pellet gun fires, except the kinetic energy is much higher because of the higher mass.  Shot between 0 and 45 degrees, it can be much higher.

    Don't be an **** and fire into the air.

    So a show that explains what the danger is, and why, *adds* to the problem?

    at no point did they ever say it was safe to fire a gun in the air. 

    A person must actively decide to ignore what they said AND inore their conclusion, in order to come away with that. 

    active willful ignorance

    and those are the same people who would casually shoot a gun in the air anyway

    There was a fun band in Dallas in the early 90's named "Sofa Kingdom" Say it real slow).

    they had stickers made that had a Red Cross and said "Santized by Sofa Kingdom".  people stuck them in dive bar bathrooms everywhere that were clearly not sanitized by anyone.

    It's also big in weddings in Saudi Arabia.  Those are out in the desert and they usually shoot a AK into the air......not much to hit out there. 

    We have used to have a big problem with it here in STL.  The police chief would be all over the radio and TV with the slogan of "Fun without Gun."  Not sure if it worked, or just gave people the idea to do it--but those commercials/PSAs stopped long ago.

    When I was an air ambulance pilot, I would usually have to work New Years Eve night, and I was always refuse to fly into STL if the ETA would put us arriving between 2330-0030.  If we got there early, we would sit for at least 0100, or we would go to Columbia or Springfield instead (maintaining a really high cruise altitude even for night time.)  Never got hit with a bullet, but I did get hit with a large bottle rocket around 4th of July about 15 yrs ago.......I had the doors off and the rotor blade hit it about 3ft to the right of me with "whack!" as it passed through the arc.
