Mythbusters did a segment that "proved" that bullets fired in the air can not kill you. The problem is, they dropped the bullet from a balloon, and showed that a bullet coming down at terminally velocity is going too slow to harm you. If someone fires a bullet straight up, they're correct. But we all know that is seldom the case. I wonder how many people saw that and now figure it is safe to fire into the air?
I'm guessing the intersection between the set of people who watch "Mythbusters" and those who would think to shoot a gun off into the air in the first place is pretty friggin close to zero.  In fact, it might just be you.

30 cal terminal velocity of a bullet fired straight up is 300 feet per second.  About what a cheap pellet gun fires, except the kinetic energy is much higher because of the higher mass.  Shot between 0 and 45 degrees, it can be much higher.

Don't be an **** and fire into the air.
Shot between 0 and 45 it doesn't ever reqch 'terminal velocity". It remains in a ballistic trajectory, travelling at the speed it left the barrel minus the wind resistance

Which basically means, someone shot you from a distance. As opposed to "a bullet fell on you"

anyone confused should google "ballistic trajectory"

This is why a football is thrown with a spiral, and barrels are rifled

  • Sorry i am so late on sending out my secret santa present. @littlesteven, i hope someone will be home to sign for it.

Im on my phone and it looked like "you" made that out of some type of ground beef. Once
i zoomed in (don't judge) I realized it was simply off the shelf kitsch. Sad!

Yep, saw that yesterday.  I guess somebody watched Mythbusters and just didn't pay close attention.

Or they're an idiot.  One of those.

Couple years ago a kid got killed here in Richmond by a July 4th gun shot into the air.
