@tikigriller do you have the capacity to haul two dozen bags of charcoal? If so, make an annual pilgrimage to another state to get some Rockwood.
I do...and you can bet, the next time I leave California, I will do all I can to find me some RW to give it a try as well.
Just bought an Egg?  Here is what you get to look forward to now:

Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night.  Next desires-Joetisceriie, Adjustable Rig, Grillmates, table and more eggs

I think a lot of the smoke issue is relative to past experiences. My forst cook last weekend was with BGE lump and I was surprised at how long it tokk to get rid of the white smoke. But that was the first time I have used lump so nothing prior to base things on.

I also almost snuffed the fire out while trying to adjust the temp and that produced a lot more white smoke, Perhaps the lighting procedure plays a huge part in the amount of white smoke. I used the fire cubes but I may try a blow torch for my next cook if I can find where my wife stashed it.

Get it while it's on sale. How many other lump brands can claim to be 100% all natural and organic? Faster start, low ash, high heat, etc.. They all claim that. Char-Broil lives up to that. No sparks and smoke that clears in just a couple of minutes is a big plus.
  • No issues so far. Bought 38 boxes 3 weeks ago, down to 35 now  =)

I'm hoping to eventually fill that air in my truck bed at that price too.  Nice work.

Burned some more last night to cook some HEB brisket/Hatch chile burgers.  Works well, good lump.  That being said, I wouldn't pay full price for this during the rest of the year because I'm a cheap bastard.

FWIW, I think some of the lump hyperbole turns people off.  It's good, burns clean.

    Proof.

I get the same type of look when cooking with CharBroil lump. It glows orangish-red, no smoke, and no flames creating a hot spot. My fire bowl remains white as well. I was very hesitant on buying this lump. I had 2 boxes in the cart and decided to just go with one. It sounded too good to be true and was probably going to be a waste of money. I tried another highly recommended brand and was let down; good lump but expensive compared to other available lump that was less expensive. The CharBroil lump has lived up to the marketing info on the package with the exception of the size of the lump. Most pieces are less than 3". I still don't know what I will find in the bottom of the box. I got 17 cooks on my first box, based on the number of fire starters I used, and still have 1/3 of a box to go.

@mikee this is a serious question and not meant to sound like anything but........

How long are your cooks on average?  I would never be able to get that many cooks off of what you are stating. Is this a real difference in a large BGE vs something smaller?  (I seem to remember you are cooking on a. Smaller BGE?)

Fair question. I guess a box is about 11-12 pounds?
1/3 box left, means 17 cooks on less than 8 pounds of lump. That would be amazing.
I have never counted the number of cooks per bag of any size lump but I don't think I'm even close to those numbers. Even on my Small BGE.

tikigriller Most of my cooks were short; under 20-30 minutes. Had a few longer cooks and a couple of times I opened up the vents after cooking to burn off the grill. I got the Weber fire starters at the same time I got the CharBroil lump. I use a fire starter when firing up the mini. I use the Mini almost all the time. My other Egg is a small. While I want a Large, it is not something I would get a lot of use from. The Mini does a great job when cooking a small amount of food.

What I am stating is fact. 17 cooks on the mini plus 1 on the small and still using the original box of CharBroil lump. I would get a better than a month when using a bag of RO. The Mini Egg is a miser and a work horse.

The reason I like the CharBroil is that I can start cooking in 5-6 minutes after lighting it. No smoke and the temperature is where it needs to be.

Brother griller, I can answer this. Absolutely there is. The mini is a fuel mizer at low to medium temps. However, as with most things, as the temps get into the high and nuclear arena, fuel use increases dramatically.

    Cool.

Used the Charbroil lump for ribs. Will have to see how much is still there. Burned a total of about 4.5 hours at about 350-400. Filled to the top of the fire box.

    On a large.

Im cooking pretty much every night and a 20lb bag of BGE is lasting me about a week give or take.

I looked at the fire grate of a large. It's huge. The smaller Eggs burn very little lump. A bag of lump will last a couple of months, not just a week.
  • Tonight I bought one box of the CB center cut.  I've been out of lump and had to use the gasser twice this week (I refuse to make it 3x).  I was very impressed. Not a single snap, crackle, or pop, it lit quick and burned well.  I have a couple of ACE discount cards that don't go into effect till the weekend and I plan to use them to offset the price of RW which is my go to lump. But I will certainly finish out this CB box and get more to put in my rotation.

No, it was fine.  They're frozen burgers that you cook frozen, ~1/3 lb each and 3/4" thick.  Hot, fast and on the flames is the best way with these.

Opened up the egg to no lump left. Well, extremely little. However, went to remove the ash and there was hardly any. That was impressive. I can absolutely see this as a great solution for smaller eggs. Babysitting a couple butts today with BGE Lump to the top of the fire ring. Lower temp but should be three times the time almost, so it will be interesting to see.

pre-edit: @tikigriller I was going to post the comment below last night but held back, still in my draft...

@tikigriller ummm... 350-400 on a Large for 4.5 hours, I'm guessing you'll have at most 1/2 firebox or very little lump left... looking forward to your update.

@tikigriller I made an educated guess based on my spiedini cook experience...
It was a quick direct cook in the large so I started with very little lump, wrong, had to refuel for the last batch.

Where this lump really shines is you can resume cooking almost instantly after refuelling, no need to wait for bad smoke to dissipate.

I love the foil to keep the kabob sticks from burning!!! So going to do that next time I use wood sticks.

Definitely still figuring stuff out. I have always just filled up the lump before every cook and never paid too much attention to how much burned until this topic got my curious Parts of my brain going.....and there are MANY of those parts!

Just to clarify ... the sticks are resting on foil-wrapped fire bricks so the kebobs are raised and don't stick to the dirty grid, stole the idea from someone else on the forum  :)

It's actually a timer. When the sticks burn through and the food hits the grill he knows they are burnt.  =)

You alao have to calculate in the density of the lump. The BGE is more dense than the char broil so it may take 3lbsof char broil to fill the fire box but 4lbs of the BGE. That's due to how carbonized it is. Do you think 2 boxes of the char broil would fit in the BGE bag even though they weigh the same? There are other much more dense lumps out there like FOGO and Wicked Good where you can fill the fire box and go 12 hours and still have lump left but you still burnt the same weight just less area.
