Another Char Broil Center Cut Lump Thread

Yes, large. Top of the fire box, not ring.Mattman3969 said:
How full did you fill the egg? Your running a large, right?tikigriller said:Opened up the egg to no lump left. Well, extremely little. However, went to remove the ash and there was hardly any. That was impressive. I can absolutely see this as a great solution for smaller eggs. Babysitting a couple butts today with BGE Lump to the top of the fire ring. Lower temp but should be three times the time almost, so it will be interesting to see.
Probably burned the right amount as someone mentioned earlier.Just bought an Egg? Here is what you get to look forward to now:
Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night. Next desires-Joetisceriie, Adjustable Rig, Grillmates, table and more eggs

I did a pork butt today on the small. It was not cooked for pulled pork but as a pork roast. Filled the small Egg up to the top of the fire box with the Char-Broil; not the fire ring. Cooked the butt for 3+ hours indirect at 320*. Put in in a stock pot and added potatoes, carrots. celery, and onion. Sealed the stock pot with alum foil. Cooked an additional 2+ hours. When said and done it was an 6 hour cook at 320*. Still had some leftover lump but decided to open the vents and let it burn. Had I filled the Egg up fully I could have gotten at least 8 hours at that temp. I can get 12+ hours on RO when cooking at 260* when the Egg is filled to the top of the fire grate. The lump lasted long enough for this cook. If I need a longer cook time, I'll have to fill the Egg up. 18 cooks and still on the first box!

It's the preferred lump of the Trump/Putin regime.

With Trump we'll all get good lump; the country will be in turmoil but we will have great lump to cook with.

Bringing this thread back up again. Has anyone loaded up a Large Egg and done a low and slow cook, say...a 13hr pork butt or similar? I bought two boxes of the stuff today, and I'm cooking a pork butt overnight tomorrow night, don't want to run out of fuel in the middle of the night. I've got a brand new back of Rockwood too, so if you guys tell me the Charbroil doesn't last for long cooks I'll just save it for shorter cooks. With it being so fast to light and burn clean, it sounds like shorter/faster cooks are the best application for it anyways.Dustin - Macon, GA

My opinion only....if it matters...ok...that really was a joke so don;t take that seriously....
The Center Cut does not provide much additional flavor I find, so I would be hesitant to use it for a lo and slo. I would use your Rockwood. FWIW, I have two boxes left, and only use it to top off my lump in the Egg, and when doing a lo and slo, I use my BGE or Royal Oak Lump.
I have NOT tried it for a lo and slo however.......and I just had a mysterious burn through of BGE lump this past weekend where I flew through the lump and there was hardly even any ash left! I'm starting to think perhaps when I loaded it up, some lump stacked funny and I thought there was more in there than there actually was. The Center Cut I added to it to save that cook seemed to work ok but I was long past the smoke absorption phase of the cook.Just bought an Egg? Here is what you get to look forward to now:

@dgaddis1 imo, based on what I've read and a few short and medium cooks I've done, save it for short cooks only.canuckland

I agree with @Canugghead
I bought 5 boxes and it works great for short cooks but I think the burn time is less for longer ones.EggMcMcc

I use this on a small and mini. This lump is light in weight. My guess is it would be marginal for having the BTU's to do a long cook especially if you're up north where the temps are getting cold. It's great for short cooks and medium cooks. It burns very clean in just minutes. If you're after a little smoky flavor you'll need to add wood chunks of your choice.

Quick warning, not all of it is center cuts. You really have to dump it all out and sort through it to get the center cut pieces. I'm averaging 76.3% center cut which is pretty good, but you gotta be careful to avoid those ends.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I filled my closet up and it wouldn't even take a whole box I would guess maybe 7 lbs. I did a 8 lb ham and then let it get hotter for bread then shut it down and next cook I was surprised how much was left after reading others posts. Limit back up and did St. Louis ribs the other day and never added any lump. You should be able to get 13 hours if you fill the large.

well enough is enough, just ordered 3 boxes off Amazon Prime, under $10 a box (delivered). Had to try it. Having trouble locally - my Home Depot thinks Lump is a seasonal thing and Last bags of RO from Walmart were below par (I usually use RO just 2 bad bags). Hope to get some bags of RW for Christmas - gonna be a good ChristmasNorthern New Jersey

Fired up the mini to cook a steak. Put in a fire starter. Didn't bother to shake off any residual ash. Added several handfuls on top. The lump was at the top of the fire box. Came back out 8-10 minutes later. I was surprised to see the temp at under 100*. Tapped on the thermometer a few times thinking it was stuck. It didn't budge. No biggie, it's still under warranty. Opened up the Egg and the lump was red hot. That's' when I saw the needle moving counter clockwise. The Egg was not 100*, more like 800-900*. This lump will burn very hot in no time. That was the hottest I got it, but I normally monitor it after 5 minutes.

He went off the deep end for a few months. However he seems to be doing somewhat better as of late. However every time we think that he is ok, he falls off of the wagon again.nolaegghead said:How's party monster doing?

Had that happen to me on my large. Have to trust your gut and interpret the thermometer when using this stuff. I thought the fire had gone out. BUt realize it had wrapped around before I opened the lid.Mikee said:Fired up the mini to cook a steak. Put in a fire starter. Didn't bother to shake off any residual ash. I have mixed emotions on this stuff. It definitely burns clean and hot but most of my cooks are low and slow so I am torn on buying more. I have 3 boxes left but that Amazon price sure looks tempting. I have $200 in Amazon gift cards so I am tempted to stock up.
Then I will worry about storing so much lump in my garage.Marshall in Beautiful Fruit Cove, FL.
