Anyone seen an egg get blown over by the wind ?

Don't really want to bring my XL into the house for the hurricane . Just wondering how much wind it would take to blow it over in the nest . Any opinions ?
More meat please !! :-)

  • Mine has survived 50-60 mph winds, but unsure what hurricane force would do.

It's shape tells me it would be hard for it to catch the wind. If it's in a nest I wouldn't be worried. On a table or cart.... Different story

  • If the wind is strong enough to blow your egg over, you'll have bigger problems I think.

More likely worry might be branches or debris blowing into it

  • Just make sure it's not too close to the edge of a patio. Buddy of mine has his parked along the edge with the wheels locked, a strong Midwest thunderstorm gave it a bit of a nudge and the rest is history.

I would take the cover off if you have it covered. I've seen someone's covered Primo get blown over when wind caught the cover and it became a sail.

I was at a yard sale here in NC and they had an Egg covered with a blanket on a deck with no railing, lady said it was there second egg because the first one was blown off the deck! Insurance paid for most of a new one. I lived in West Palm Beach/Jupiter FL for 50 years and have been through several Hurricanes and during Wilma me eggs were inside the workshop. Hope the storm stays well off the coast.

Consider other flying objects may come in contact with the ceramic. I would move inside if possible.....but assume it is insured regardless. Be safe!

Chuck is yours in a table or nest?  Is it on stable ground?  OK now disregard. More importantly are you stocked up on beer oh & water?  The last TS damage is worse than we'll likely see as far inland as we are. That said prepare for the worst & hope for the best. I wouldn't be too concerned of tip overs but, flying debris is another animal.

Just to be safe, I'd tether your dog to your Egg during the storm.  You'll be good to go!

    Do you have any sugargliders?

Now that's funny.  OP, you'll have to excuse @tarheelmatt for bringing up old history.

Right now I am working near the airport . I'm doing a commissioning and mechanical start up on a new five floor hospital wing. Probably just take Friday off. NOW that you mention beef ribs... I think I will leave it outside and lash it to the deck and egg on ! :-)

We are expecting 70 mph moving mine in an area protected by 3 walls behind the elevator. that is as long as it stays east land fall & I am 3rd row seats, direct hit they say would be 10-20' surge would flood my ground level/garages & probably my 1st level of living area.

    A> Michael I'm IN! @DoubleEgger

B> @ZippyLip  I'm pretty sure common sense will prevail. However, if it's only 70 mph gusts....egging will continue.

  • Since my little deck fire, I have no problem screwing some 2x4 pieced to the deck and attaching the nest to the deck.  It could come inside, but I plan of cooking Wed, Thurs, and Fri on it.  Will be at Eggfest Sat, and will more than likely be egging on Sunday something that I saw at the fest!

Squall lines have blown my Weber Smokey Mountain over twice but none of my other grills. I do place them up against a wall/fence when a big event like Matthew is on the way.

@XLentEGG   Where you at?  Matthew is anticipated to be a Cat 4 as it hits or goes by us here in SoFL.  I think that would be more than enough to knock an egg over.  I currently have my egg in the corner of my covered screen porch, which creates a bit of a lee.  If the storm stays offshore, I will leave it there. If it looks like stronger winds coming ashore here, I will move it into the house.

There was one posted after Katrina. May be worth getting a couple of ratchet straps if your deck is solid. Good luck!

A buddy in Kansas (no hurricane) had the lid open on his KJ Big Joe. Wind hit and blew it over, breaking the dome. He told KJ what happened and they covered it under warranty.

I'm under the impression that all eggs should come inside into a room with all interior walls and no windows.  If you h we many that you run out room, keep your youngest kid outside leaning against the door to help keep it closed.   Good luck to everyone in Matthew's path.

I wouldn't take a chance. I put my medium egg in the storage room. I agree with NorthGAcock about flying to debris damaging your egg.
