No access to an Egg during vacation, but found a substitute!...

So, we're currently spending a few weeks' vacation in the Loire Valley region of France. It's an amazing area rich in history, as you are a short drive from several impressive castles (eg. Chéverny, Chambord, Clos Lucé, Amboise, Chenonceau, etc.).

Truth be told, I was sad to leave my Egg at home, as I just bought a new large and cedar table. However, luckily, I found an appropriate substitute on the property we are renting during the time we spend here (pics attached). 

Not bad at all, though there is no way to low and slow on this thing! Made some homemade burgs (with limited ingredients available at our rental property) with great success! 

Makes me me think this may be a fun setup I'd like to add to the backyard at some point in the future (even though the Egg does this and more!).

Anyone else running a similar setup?

Also interesting to try some new cooks while here. Went to a local market this morning and was half tempted to pick up pigeon (a pricey delicacy here!).

PS: I've twice seen Eggs for sale here in France, but you can tell that they are somewhat of a rarity here!

    I've cooked on a lot of different grills on vacations, but never one like that.  I've found that the principles I have learned here - cook to temp, not time, etc - have served me well on all grills/fires/pits.

    XXL BGE, Karebecue, Klose BYC, Chargiller Akorn Kamado, Weber Smokey Mountain, Grand Turbo gasser, Weber Smoky Joe, and the wheelbarrow that my grandfather used to cook steaks from his cattle

    Grocery Stores in France carry lump, you are good to go there! Go to the meat counter and get the pork. I did chops on a grill I found there, and used Cherry wood, harvested from the orchards surrounding the home we stayed, for smoke. Loire Valley has great white wines, you are going to love it there.
    We stay in the Burgundy region, in Bourne, for two weeks, then went to Paris and stayed a week on the Isle de St. Louis.
    Loire Valley is one of the best kept secrets in France. Bon Appetit!

  • Thanks all. It's been great so far. Just incredible to see thousand year old castles and even ruins several thousands of years old, as we have nothing nearly that old at home. Great food and sights to date. My waistline is certainly expanding; good thing I have a gym membership kicking in upon my return.

    Oh, that's just not FAIR!!!  ;)  The Loire valley is one of my favorite places I've ever been.  I am SO jealous!!!

    I gotta say, though, I'm not sure I'd be cooking very much if I were in France.  I'd be chowing down on French cooking at French restaurants, and savoring the foods of another place and another culture.  I can cook my kind of food when I'm home.

    But have a ball, however you feel like it!  I'm envious as can be!
