We haven't had a demo yet. Guy had to have it. No sales pitch. We will have demos with the rep soon.lousubcap said:@pgprescott - are you in line for any demo cooks with that thing?
And I'm curious as to the demographics of the customer who bought one if you can share. -
@pgprescott - thanks for the above. Bet you wish you had more "gotta have it" customers. Yeah. It's pretty nice, but not exactly apples to apples with ceramic cookers. It will do some things better and some things worse. Those bashing it are not informed, even if they claim to be informed.SGH said:It's just a smoker fellows. Nothing to get so upset about. I bet bet if you ask owners of kettles and wsm cookers they have similar comments about idiots who spend $ on those expensive ceramic grills. People like to justify/validate their stuff. -
They are few and far between. The BGE usually sells after 10 visits over a year or two. I get it, it's a big purchase for most people.lousubcap said:@pgprescott - thanks for the above. I don't encourage the impulsive gadget buying. Don't get me wrong, I have tons of them for sale, but I would rather the guy be informed and happy in the end. Every gadget isn't for every person, but there is a person for every gadget. -
@SGH I know you'd buy 2 if it had her face painted in it.

Pete, you nailed it. Personally, I would love one of these kettles. I see lots of places they would work well. Wouldn't replace my eggs, but doesn't mean its no good.

Seems like the general consensus remains that it's still too damn expensive.

Having seen it and experienced an excellent track record with Weber charcoal grills, I can see where it will acquire/have a following. From an earlier thread post,
"I'm sure it will attract those who have grown up with webers and are looking to move on to a new high-end charcoal cooker. Cooking size of the XL and its sure appears like they used that price point (with platesetter and nest) as a target for the tri-pod model. They will sell but it won't have the low&slow staying power of a BGE (and that will likely not be a factor for many who are looking to buy as those customers probably aren't familiar with a BGE) based on the available fuel volume.
Weber knows their market-they get $1300 for their 36" kettle so this is not a reach for them."
And now two weeks later, the above still holds for me. Just an opinion and we all know...Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
Since this new Weber can hold 225-250 for 50+ hours I think that pretty much disproves the "it won't have the low & slow staying power of a BGE" thinking.lousubcap said:Having seen it and experienced an excellent track record with Weber charcoal grills, I can see where it will acquire/have a following. @HeavyG - I did check out that 50 hour post earlier but I based the above ( April 15th) on the advertised info from Weber. That said, I still think the following applies ...(and that will likely not be a factor for many who are looking to buy as those customers probably aren't familiar with a BGE). Regardless, the market will drive the acceptance. I hope it works for them.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! They base their time on a small amount of coal. Add more and you get more time. A lot more time. Their gimmick is to tell you about how much charcoal will burn @ a certain temp. Don't be fooled into thinking it won't cook a long time.lousubcap said:@HeavyG - I did check out that 50 hour post earlier but I based the above ( April 15th) on the advertised info from Weber. I just dont understand the egg folks needing this weber to fail and the weber folks needing this new one to be better than the egg.

forget the company names & all that nonsense, how about simply getting behind anyone that can build a better mousetrap that benefits "all folks that cook outside"?Biggreenpharmacist said:I just dont understand the egg folks needing this weber to fail and the weber folks needing this new one to be better than the egg.
If that's what Weber did here doesn't that force everyone else in the industry to step up their game? We're all the beneficiaries of that...

Not to burst any bodies bubble...I built a Reverse Flow. When it comes to smoking...well...it makes the Egg look like a toy. Simple as that. Want true smokey flavor...burn sticks. Smoked a Butt in it the other day...when Ernestina was making tacos out of the leftovers the house smelled like my Reverse Flow while it was cooking. However, Reverse Flows are a one trick pony....unless of course you have one with a warming box and a rack in the firebox....which the next one I build will probably have both...
Downside to the RF is you need to feed the beast.....
That being said I love our Eggs...will be picking up our 5th one the 7th of May... -
I love how you said " I'll have my grad students get..."JohnInCarolina said:I'll have my grad students get the specs and create a finite element model, so that we can do a coupled thermo-mechanical analysis of the whole system. We'll throw in the fluid dynamics and rad transport because while those effects might be negligible, we won't know for sure until after a full analysis is done. To be realistic, we'll model the food too, and use a Monte Carlo method to sweep the parameter space.
Now, can anyone just tell me whether or not it's better to model the plasticity of ribs with an associative flow rule, or should we go with non-associative? I'm talking about the collagen fibers, and not the bone, just so that nobody's confused.
I suggest waiting until the fall... then it can be someone's thesis subject. if they play it right, they'll get their PhD out of a forum pissing match

Nobody has mentioned yet that Weber's customer service is EXCELLENT! I have many Weber kettle grills, all second-hand purchased on CL, and in great shape. The oldest is 17yo now I think.
I completely rebuilt an old Weber Performer, that had been abused and neglected by the previous owner, several years ago. I called to order some replacement parts (like the igniter switch, tube, regulator, etc) and they sent me about $80 worth of parts...free. Even though it was out of warranty, and I wasn't the original owner. Their CS had been top notch some other times I had called too.
If things are still the way they were several years ago, this new product will be backed by solid service. Yeah the price is high, but in the end i don't think there is that strong an argument to convince someone to buy a BGE vs. this thing. We've all drunk some of the Kool-Aid, so it seems preposterous to us, but Weber is going to have some satisfied customers no doubt.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

By my calculations off the BTU's, you could do the same with about 30% less of high quality lump, and nor have to stir/agitate it because the ash is so much less. The volume would be much more though.......more than firebox would hold. I'll try to find the bulk density and figure it out. -

Cool grill. Excited to purchase one. Reviews from those that have used it are impressive.

I have a very old broken down Webber kettle grill I used previous to the purchase of my first BGE. I have used it once since the BGE initial purchase to cold smoked mushrooms. Webber makes an excellent product, and have done so for years. I am fine with my XL & MM, while keeping the Webber for cold smoking has me covered.
It is great Webber has another cooking appliance available, and perhaps, if it were available when I moved away from Webber with the purchase of my eggs, I may have bought that.
It was not available. I got the egg. Love my purchase, and, frankly, with this forum and the food I have been able to produce, I am good for years to come."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

My eggucation is only on high school level. My IQ nor student loan payments are as high as @JohnInCarolina.
But you can't tell me that Webers cost is that high on these. When they
finally wake up and figure out the right price point on these, they are gonna be everywhere.good news is retailers will probably mark them down 30 percent at the end of the season just like they do with the rest of everything else.2-XLs ,MM,blackstone,Ooni koda 16,R&V works 8.5 gallon fryer, express smoker and 40" smoking cajun

I was over at Petes shop and saw them as well. Both the free standing and the cart version. And here are MY thoughts and impretions.
Is is very well built. Looks to be very easy to use as well. Won't have to worry about a wood table catching fire either. Price point is high. This opinion might change when the Weber rep does a demo cook. It is a heck of a lot lighter then a egg. If the demo cook goes well will I own one you ask? HELL YES I will.1 XXL BGE, 1 LG BGE, 2 MED.
