I'm a watch and learn from others mistakes person. @nakedwhiz website has some wicked videos of flashbacks. Almost enough to scare someone from even opening the lid.dmirish1 said:Been cooking on the egg pretty steady the last few months since getting it. What/How did you come to realize how important it was to burp the egg? What's your story? Mine was from cooking Pizza. I forgot once to not burp the egg, then holy $hit!. Burnt lots of what hair I had left on my left arm which was the one I opened it with. The flare up was incredible, but not something I care to witness again. Fortunately, the burned hairs on my arm were the only result of my stupidity. Who's got a story?Steven

I forgot to burp just once on a high temp cook - it singed the hair off of my left arm and a good part of my left eyebrow.
I now burp the Egg even when it's cold.

I got mine first time I did steaks. Temp was about 500-600 and I snatched it open forgetting the burp. Not only got my arm but a full face blast that singed my eyebrows and about 1/2" of hair on my forehead. I got a haircut a couple days later and as soon as I sat down in the chair, my barber looked at me and said, "Ha, looks like you opened your grill to fast."

My incident was during a pizza cook. I had only had my egg for two or three weeks and didn't have proper habits in place. I lost all the hair on my right arm. I had a buddy loose a good bit of his eyebrows. Lesson learned for both of us.1 large BGE, Spartanburg SC

High temp steak searing.... Popped that dome open and whoosh-singe with delayed onset of pain and stink.... Burned hair smells something awful! What is worse is when it is you facial hair! Also managed to scorch my fingers, but didn't realize it until a few days later when my fingers started peeling!

On a high temp cook not paying attention. I got lucky and only had minor hair loss on my hand. Now I find myself burping everything, lol.Mckinney, TX

You will.
Don't ask me how I know. -
I did this on the weekend, dumb ass mistake, was arguing with the kids, getting the temp up to reverse sear some chops, was about 600F, looking at kids and all riled up I opened the egg and WOOOFF. Kids and wife got a laugh out of it. Argument ended anyways. Was a good reminder. Didn't get my face at-least.

I as everyone else was doing a high temp cook, I think steaks and forgot to burp the egg. I had a long sleeve shirt on so the hair there was safe, but my eyebrows and the hair on the top of my head didn't fair well. Good thing is I needed a hair cut. I didn't really see it, but heard and felt it though. I haven't done it since. As someone said when I posted my experience; it's not if it will happen, but when will it happen. I have heard that it can come out of the bottom vent too, but haven't seen it yet.XL, WSM, Coleman Road Trip Gas GrillKansas City, Mo.

Every egger's arm has looked like that at one point or another. I've never thought to take a pic or it though lol.AlbertaEgger said:I did this on the weekend, dumb ass mistake, was arguing with the kids, getting the temp up to reverse sear some chops, was about 600F, looking at kids and all riled up I opened the egg and WOOOFF. My post was in accurate, I have to think back as to why again, like I said I was in the middle of an argument and not thinking but for some reason I had the cap on and was shutting down, so chops were done, I think I was reheating some spuds maybe? I was also a few drinks in. Maybe more than a few...County of Parkland, Alberta, Canada

That video is pretty cool. I even watched the HD version. It felt much hotter when it happened to me than what the video shows.

I had one more sort of flare up when I had the wok way down on the coals and it got to the fire. Holy $****! Scared the crap out of me.

You might wish to watch out for the blowback through the bottom vent. You may never see it, but you will know when it happens.

I have experienced a blowback through the bottom vent and it scared the living daylights out of me. It was this intense blue flame accompanied by a guttural whoosh. Thankfully, I was not standing in its path. Since that time, it has not happened again.

You really have to be careful with this kind of thing. Arm hair is one thing, but the last thing you want is to singe your eyebrows off. We all know what happens after that.

mine, I learned thru "trial by fire". Bought my large used and really didn't know a lot about the egg. Knew it got hot(real hot) nothing about burping. First cook got the high temp and ready to chunk on a nice thick ribeye, next an unfamiliar(then) sound followed by flames, followed by a few choice words of surprise and less arm hair. Held on to the steak, dropped the lid and let temp go down. Steak was great. Homework began on proper burping technique. Do it now even if temps are low.STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!GIVE ME OYSTERS AND BEER FOR DINNER EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR& I'LL FEEL FINE!SW Georgia : LARGE & MINI BGE

Hmmm....have to look up what could cause that. Being in a wheelchair, some....ummm....sensitive parts, shall we say, are in line with the bottom vent.Chef Charles said:I have experienced a blowback through the bottom vent and it scared the living daylights out of me. I've not had a blowback through the bottom vent, does that only happen if you forget to burp the egg, or can it happen somehow but itself? I don't plan on having any more kids, but a bottom vent blowback sounds... um, you know.LBGE, platesetter, Stoker wifi, StokerX Mac software, Pit Pal for iOS, @HerringBigEgg on Twitter, joined forum in 2008Austin, TX

I came to realize it when my brother almost burnt my face off on National TV. This photo of a TV broadcast does it no justice. That dang flame was huge!
(full disclosure - we accidentally left our daisy wheel back home in Texas and had to use a make shift aluminum foil cap which would not stay on. And we were mega high heat searing.)

i love the smell. dads first experience with the egg i told him not to touch it, its not a toy...go inside to get something and come out to see the front of his jacket all burnt
i told ya so

I was cooking steak the whole family over took the steaks off and opened it wide open top and bottom had a couple more beers looked at temp and it was only 250 I thought what the heck opened it to see and buff scared everyone sitting there. the dial went all the way around. Lesson well learned.XL & waiting for my Mini Max Bloomington MN.

Had one of those bottom vent blow backs a couple weeks ago. Bottom open and top off heating up. Was sitting there enjoying one of the few evenings we have had to sit out when all of a sudden. Whoosh ! Thank God I was sitting off to the side. Could not believe what happened. Then went on to change shorts....

Agree about the importance of burping the egg. Just got the hair on my right arm burned. Also, the heat climbed up to my face and got my eyes, so my eye lashes got burned. My left eye hurts a little, but don’t think it’s something serious. Heat also got some of my hair on my head. I’ve had my egg 3 years. I usually burp the egg, but I got a little careless today. I held onto my egg handle a little too long, as I didn’t want to let it drop down hard and break the egg. I wished the egg had a top like the Kamaco, as I would have released the handle as soon as I felt the heat.

I "binge-clicked" the heck out of this forum before buying my Large many years ago, and to date I haven't forgotten to burp, never had a flashback. And I probably should NOT have typed that out loud. 😯
There's a similar saying about there being two types of motorcyclists: those that have gone down, and those that will, but I'm not typing that one out. 🤐

It was winter and doing a very high sear on some steaks. Thank God I was wearing my snowmobiling jacket and had a high temp glove on. I just remember a blue flame erupting from the opening and laughing afterwards at my brains odd behavior trying to figure out what was happening in a split second.
Good times
