Midnight after Vacation

We got home from vacation today. Busy couple of weeks and I'm in Egg-Withdrawal. Kitchen was emptied before vacation so I just grabbed a frozen burger blob and tossed it on the egg. It's about a 3/4lb blob. Perfect night for midnight eggin'. Here's a few pictures from our Pacific Northwest vacation.

Ketchup and Mustard sure help when the burger overcooks.

Nice photos!
Seems like we all strive for extremes. Keep the meat moist. Dry age it and concentrate the flavor by evaporating moisture. Beef jerky must be dry. Sous vide. Reverse sear, don't stab, stabbing doesn't matter, etc. I say watevah tastes good is the way to do it. Sauce works. Good job.

Can't argue with you on the extremes. Just kicking back on the porch relaxing while the egg smoked was great. The PNW has gotten very crowded or I just forgot what it's like there.Steven

Thank you for sharing the images captured on your trek. PNW is one of the most beautiful areas of our country. I travel frequently as well as globally, and I must say, there is nothing like getting home and enjoying home cooked meals, especially when you can do it on the BGE.

Thanks for sharing those great vacation pics, looks awesome. I think that is unquestionably the ugliest thing I have ever seen you cook on the egg. (I Understand the Kitchen was bare)...
..But you still turned it into an edible and tasty looking meal..

We just came back from PNW mid May. Loved it, a little chilly though. I must admit I am sorry that i did not see the mountains and falls, we stayed in the cities-Portland and Seattle to be exact. There is always next time though!

@ Mickey, I think that bridge pic is Newport, OR central OR coast, or down south at Coos Bay.
Also what a great shot of Multnomah Falls, just off the Columbia River.
Great pics of my home country, @stemc33 , thanks!John in the Willamette Valley of Oregon -

@Jeepster47, Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge.
@evie1370, Multnonah Falls are a must see if you go back Portland. It's on the old scenic highway that follows the Columbia river. It's only about a 30 minute drive from the Airport. The mountain shots are from the Alaska part of the trip.Steven

It was a very enjoyable vacation, but so glad to be home. We truly live in a place that when we get back from vacation its's an awesome feeling to come home and happy the vacation is over vs. wishing the vacation could last forever.NPHuskerFL said:Glad to see ya back in the saddle @stemc33

@Mickey, Jaydub got it. It's the Bridge in Newport Oregon. We rented a crab pot and went crabbing off a pier below the bridge. We got several red rock and a few dungenes crab that night. It was a beautiful night as you can see from the pic. We used to frequent the Oregon coast in the 80's and 90's when we lived in the Portland suburbs.Steven

nice pics @stemc33 - interesting how the grass is always greener and there is so much to see. Here we have a family from Wyoming travelling to the PNW for vacation while many of us out here travel to Montana and Wyoming for vacation! Great country, eh?
@NPHuskerFL - those are cold water Pacific shrimp, very different than Gulf shrimp.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -
@Skiddymarker Oh so they are magical
I'll happily devour Atlantic or Gulf shrimp at a more reasonable price. If they are fresh caught there in the PNW and not having to transport etc why the exorbitant price? I'm sure cold water shrimp are different just like cold water lobster vs lobster in FL (I like both).LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL -
@NPHuskerFL - not really magical, that's reserved for PNW mushrooms, these are just hellishly expensive. Transportation costs have nothing to do with living here, unfortunately. It is all based on market. I now that PNW shrimp are not as plentiful as Gulf shrimp, maybe that has something to do with it.
nothing to do with real shrimp, but last year my brother from Ontario was visiting and on a Costco trip he noticed that Thai shrimp rings are cheaper in Ontario than they are in Vancouver, which is surprising because to get to Toronto, the frozen shrimp rings must pass through Vancouver.
Even that sockeye at $17US per pound is expensive - but it is in Pike Place Market - watching someone throw a fish across the store is all part of the charm and adds to the cost of the fish I guess.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -
@Skiddymarker I'd concur with the supply/demand and whatever the free market bears. It's business not UNICEF right
Probably pays for itself having a fishing licence and catching your own fish/seafood. FWIW I'm certain the PNW shrimp are also delicious. I love seafood period regardless of region.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL -
Having a fishing license most often doesn't translate into savings. Just depends on how good of a fisherman one is. And being a good fisherman doesn't automatically equal savings. Fuel, gear, license, and drinks get costly.NPHuskerFL said:@Skiddymarker I'd concur with the supply/demand and whatever the free market bears. It's business not UNICEF right

Had a 24 footer, cuddy cab - idea was to catch some salmon - which we did. But when it was all said and done I figure it cost me about $200 a fish. I keep telling myself the time with family on those day trips was priceless, which it was, but damn those wild sockeye are expensive.stemc33 said:

We have some of the lowest shrimp prices ever here in South LA right now. Wholesale shrimp is $1.50. I can get local gulf shrimp right off the boat for, depending on size, $2.50 to $6.00 per pound.
I'm thinking about getting a shrimping license added to my fishing license - mostly to catch bait. Will pull that trigger if I get the rig and nets.

Nice boat @nolaegghead. Just got off the phone with my Brother in law, he just left "the shrimp pimp". A guy he knows in Charleston, SC who wholesales the giant shrimp off the back of his boat. $5 a lb. I'll see him tonight, he picked up 10lbs for me. I can't wait.
Great pics of the PNW, SWMBO and I did a 14 day driving trip from Seattle to Monterrey in 2002. We need to repeat that trip, it was epic.
