A simple  salt and pepper would be just fine for a first butt too!
No doubt about it brother eye^^^^^^^^^^

    3 parts brown sugar
    1 part salt
    2 parts blackpepper
    1 part coriander
    1 part cumin
    1 part onion
    1 part garlic
    .5 part cinnamon
     red pepper to taste

    adjust to your preferences.

I have used one in the past real similar to the above only minus the cumin and cinnamon. It's actually pretty dog gone good.

@SGH:  Yep, we started having our rub bottled in January.  We worked on it for seven years and finally got it just like we want it.  We have two different versions.  Hotch and Shelly use it all the time!  They are very creative with how they use it too.....not just on proteins, they use it on smoked peanuts, in dips, on veggies, etc.
If I may ask, where can it be purchased from? I love trying new things and would like to give it a try.
@SGH:  You can order it off of our website:  www.itsmyrub.com  Thanks for your interest!

^^ What everyone else said about the Bad Byron's.  It's my "go to" and I buy it in the big container.  Plus I'm kind of lazy.  Don't judge me :)

By the way, your cook looks AMAZING!  The bark is spot on and I can almost smell the smoke from here!

I also agree with some other posters that a vinegar BBQ sauce is a must.  This Big Daddy's North Carolina recipe is what I have used the last couple pulled pork cooks, and people are still talking about it.  It does make the house somewhat "aromatic" though LOL but that's all part of the process!   Enjoy.  Congratulations on your success.
