Having my little girls birthday tomorrow and decided to cook two shoulders for it instead of butts.
Going at 225°over night and I'll adjust in the morning.
Hickory and apple for smoke and box filled with Rockwood.

Looks like a great start, hope for a happy conclusion.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

Curious, why the shoulders? Do you like them better or get a good deal? Maybe wanted the extra yield per roast? BTW, looking great! Enjoy the special day. I just opined on the real family significance of the egg on another post. These are the events that the egg only makes better.

Newbie mistake. Was told that the shoulder and butt were basically the same? What is the difference?

A whole shoulder is made up of the (boston) butt and the picnic. The butts are most common and it comes from the top of the shoulder. The picnic is the part of the shoulder that runs down the front leg a little. Matt is cooking up picnic shoulders, however they are often just labeled as "shoulder roast".Blassiter said:Newbie mistake. Was told that the shoulder and butt were basically the same? Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
Which is better for pulled pork?

I want to get a whole shoulder and cook it next time I cook pulled pork. I hear the best is picnic/butt mixed.They/Them

I did a butt and a picnic once. I couldn't find a whole shoulder but I wanted to simulate it. I pulled them separately at first and had a few people sample each. I think the nod actually went to the picnic. To be fair, they were from two different stores. I went to Publix and they had a nice size picnic but no big butts, so the butt came from Kroger.
They are both great for pulled pork but if I had to pick one I would still probably say a butt. Since there is more fat they are more forgiving.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
Have some better pictures on my camera, was able to get a few pictures of the shoulders getting ready to come off.

I actually like shoulders better. The shoulder has more white lean. Shoulders are indigenous to Lexington BBQ ,so I wanted to stick to my roots.pgprescott said:Curious, why the shoulders? Shoulders actually yield less as more bones are present. They also take longer to cook.
People raved about the Q and other sides I had. I am pleased they were pleased. I'll post better pictures later of other grub.------------------------------

I actually did a coarse chop on these and didn't pull. Pulled off at 180°(note some places probed lower). I think this answers your question to @Blassiter .hapster said:Looking good so far...

A whole is nice because you have the best of both worlds. I am a huge fan of white lean that is on the shoulder.DMW said:Looks good Matt.

For pulling I agree, for chopped, the shoulder is the best, personally speaking.SmokeyPitt said:I did a butt and a picnic once. I couldn't find a whole shoulder but I wanted to simulate it. I must have cooked a shoulder last time because, it had some white meat and it was not easy to pull. Figured I just overlooked it or something.

Wished I would have taken better pictures throughout the cook with my camera, but didn't. It was a whirlwind all day Saturday. For those that wondered about how I chopped the shoulder, here is the results along with a couple of the sides I made too.
Chopped Q with added dip...
Pasta salad....
Potato salad....
