New here, and New To The BGE

Hello everyone,

I am new around these parts, and also new to the BGE. I have had it for about a month now. I have only direct grilled with it to date, as I was waiting on my PlateSetter to get in. It finally arrived today, so I am sure there will be a low and slow cook coming SOON!!!

I have been using some form of Webber for my 41 years on earth, and finally stepped up to this. All I can say so far is, I am not sure why I stuck with the Kettle and WSM for so long. I still like them, but I dont see them getting a whole lot of use anymore!!

Here is two pictures of tonights cook, Chops and Tots. Chops were outstanding, Tots not so much......lol

Looks good from here.  The problem with the tots is that they're naked!  Wrap them in bacon and throw some rub on them, Griffin style!

    Welcome aboard!

Thanks YEMTrey, I will give that a try the next time. Not sure what I done wrong, but they were pretty much a soggy mess. They didnt get crispy at all. Had grill temp around 400* +/- for 25 mins. Wife thought maybe it was the cast skillet?

Welcome! Tots work better indirect. And wrapped in bacon with rub doesn't hurt either...

Now that you have your platesetter lots more options, not just low n slow.

    Is that an XL?

Welcome aboard!! Chops look bangin good. I think your wife is right on the CI skillet theory. You should try them at 425 indirect and right on the grid. If you wanna get crazy wrap the tots with bacon and top with pepper jack cheese. These things are killer.

Thanks a lot for the welcome and help.
I still can't believe how easy it came up to temp and stayed there even in the low 20's.
I still have a ton to learn and absorb in but so far it's been FUN!!!

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. The old grills will still see plenty of action. They will be used as storage for all the Eggcessoriers that you will purchase. On the tots the pan probably wasn't hot enough or they didn't cook long enough.

Welcome. As for the tots I'm not sure why they didn't come out crisp. I did a tot type casserole last week and it turned out pretty good. I fried up some bacon on my griddle first. I cooked up tots on a small sheet pan till they were almost done. I then put in a casserole dish. This is when I layered shredded cheese, crumbled bacon pieces, and scallions. Served with a bit of sour cream. Again welcome and enjoy

Thanks again all for the welcome and tips/advice.

I will be trying the tots again sometime. From what some are saying here I think the problem was cold cast iron. I didnt preheat it at all, dumped the frozen tots in it and straight to the grill. That casserole sounds very good grege345.

  • Welcome. Fire bricks with your kettle grill grate for a second level is a cheap way to go. And bricks in the fire box will keep you lump in one half for direct and indirect if needed.

Thanks a bunch for that tip @UrbanForestTurnings‌ I never thought using fire bricks on the existing grate to make a second level or just for raised cooks. I have been looking into something for this but don't really have the money right now
This will work out perfect till I can get a proper raised setup.

    Thanks again!!!

Try this, I got the idea from several folks around here.  Four cheap bolts, washers and nuts along with a $12 18" weber grill.  Works great.image
