@jessie318 The "break-in" process is largely BS.  It's really there to dry the gasket adhesive, but that happens quickly.  You will be fine just keeping the egg under 300 for an hour or so on your maiden voyage, then do whatever you'd normally do with it.

Jessica, that is the most dramatic and unbelievable post I've ever read on a BGE forum, and I've been on the forums for over 10 years.

i could hear the trumpets playing when you described how this prince of a dealer took care of the problem!

Jennifer - Don't worry!  I have to believe that this is a very rare occurrence!  Now that I have the egg, properly set up, I can't believe "all that" was missing.  The interior looks entirely different - and if anyone had bothered to check,  it's not something that would have gone unnoticed.

Greeno55 - I think it's the angle of this picture because I thought the same thing until I got home and saw it in person.  (My son sent me that pic.). When I got down on the level of the draft door it was perfectly centered between the legs.

Eggnorth- Thanks for the note about moving it out from the wall.  After the last frightening experience, I will be giving the Egg a wide berth when the temperature starts to climb!

One question I do have for the forum - if anyone reads this far into the thread any more - how many hours do I need to cook at a low temp before I can cook something I really want to cook - like a steak or a burger??  I know the manual says "first three uses" but there's a big difference between smoking something for half a day vs grilling a piece of fish for a few minutes.   What's the requirement for that break-in?

    Thanks,
    Jessica

I don't really believe that "seasoning" the gasket does any good. If it was true and you had a well aligned dome and base more heat would be better. There isn't much you can do to save those gaskets in the long run.

Whew - I can now say that I've had a seamless cook in my BGE!  In the interest of 'better safe than sorry', I roasted garlic cloves to season the gasket.   Then, Saturday I went to the dealer who has now won my heart and bought a handful of accessories.  It seemed like the cast iron grill was absolutely essential - so it was on the top of my list!

Saturday night I did my first Egg burgers and once I got the temperature up to 500 -  (I was too conservative with the air at first, I think) - it was a dream.  I can't believe how easy it was!  Unfortunately we were too hungry and dove in before I thought to take a picture, but next time...

Many thanks to all for your counsel and support.  I'm excited to be part of this group - so much to learn from all of you.

    Thanks,
    Jessica
  • Stuff happens. Nobody's perfect. They owned their mistake, corrected it and the buyer is happy. How on earth is that inexcusable?
It would be like buying a car and having the dealer tell you to drive it off the lot without any tires.
