BGE Makeover

So when I bought my XL it had a plastic handle. So yesterday I asked the dealer if I could swap it out for the wooden one on their display model.

Wood looks so much better, didn't realize the new Eggs have plastic.

The plastic one on mine doesn't bother me any. It should hold up for a while.

Plastic is forever, isn't it? At least that's what they tell us about shopping bags and water bottles in landfills. Wood looks nice, but for most of us lazy twits, plastic is probably much more practical. On the other hand, once you have bought all the regular accessories, you can get a custom handle.....

  • I didn't really mind the plastic but I noticed it got really hot. Only when ligthing and times when the lid is open. So I'm hoping the wood will stay a little cooler.

My wood handle doesn't get hot at all. You can't really read the logo on it from all of the creosote. I like the new wood handles. They are beefier than the one that came with my egg.

Plastic seems like a pretty lousy/cheap alternative that close to a major heat source. I'm surprised the mother ship signed off on this one.

I haven't seen ANY with plastic handles at the 5 or so dealers in Jax, FL and surrounding area. Do y'all still see them at your dealers? Thought MotherShip xnayed these due to extreme negative feedback. Or am I wrong here?

  • I bought mine from Gulfport MS and only his demos had wood(minus one now) new boxes eggs all had plastic. So he says. Even the grate grabber is plastic now. I think I also saw a plastic handle pizza peel also.

See to me that just cheapens a quality product. There's no sense in it.

  • I Agree. I was going to try to make a handle. I'm glad I was able to swap it out.

I preface this with...I'm not trying to sell a t-shirt here or anything :)) but, just saw these and they appear to be quality made and I'm thinking of one for my LBGE. Check it out if ya like. http://www.amlwoodart.com/BGE1.html

Marty makes a nice product.  Bought three of his handles, 2 india rosewoods for the larges, and 1 walnut for the WSM.

On a related note, I was at a friends the other day and I noticed that their Large has a handle about 10 to 12 inches long, mine has a short handle, maybe 6 inches at best.  When did they change the handle on the large?
And before someone else says it, yes, I am jealous of you guys with the extra length....

Really a plastic handle? We pay enough for the products, produce something of higher quality.... The wood handle probably cost them $2 a handle while the plastics will cost $0.30.... Ill pay their loss of margin for a wood handle.
  • Double-edged sword.  The wood handles get dirty and the edges round over and wear away with exposure.  The plastic seems cheap.

    BGE gets complaints either way.

I have a plastic handle and don't have any issues with it getting hot. My side tables are also plastic and they scratch pretty easily with is very annoying.

The composite (plastic) handles have been nixed. All Eggs are arriving now with the wooden handles again, just like they were the year befor last. If your dealers don't have them yet, they will.

If you feel the need to, ask your dealer to order you a wood replacement handle on their next order...item # RHWA for L, XL and item # RHWB for Mini, S and Med

@captjo...that makes perfect sense. The dealers I've visited are probably moving decent volume so the composite handled units are likely long gone. It's good that they can get the wooden handle if they so desire.
