Buyers Remorse thread got me thinking.

I just got an AR for Christmas and have not even touched my plate setter since.

So do I need it anymore? Should I keep it or sell it? I feel like I will probably not use it anymore but I don't want to sell it and retreat it.

Thoughts.... Are there any cooks that the plate setter does better than the AR?

Not saying you can't use your AR for this, but I really like my PS with legs up to sit my camp style Lodge Dutch Oven on when making chili, Keary's Beans, burgundy mushrooms and other such uses. BTW a camp style DO is the one with the 3 legs meaning the bottom doesn't burn due to air flow.

It seems the trouble of selling the platesetter would probably not be worth what you'd get for it.

    +1 on this.

Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

I wonder if it would be feasible to start an exchange thread? People could post what they have and others could make offers.

The fact that you can't make a sticky here would most likely make it difficult though.

I got the AR and the place setter, I use only the AR for my low and slows and the place setter works well for my pizzas and cooking with my cast iron.

It's a convenience thing for me, both do the job perfect in my world.

What are you using for indirect with your AR? Spider and pizza stone? I don't want my pizza stone to get drippings all over it and I am too lazy to foil the stone. I have all the toys from CGS but I also have a plate setter for each egg also. They both have their places I would not sell a plate setter if you already have it. If it was either or the AR is a no brainer but I always use my plate setters for indirect.

I use the small 13 in stone on the spider for indirect. I also have the BGE 14 in pizza stone.

I also have the extender for the top of the AR for my pizza stone.

I think I will hang on to it for my dutch oven and baking.

    Thanks for everyones help.

In theory and good faith your idea makes GREAT sense, but unless you are a business which ships a lot then trying to sell and ship heavy items makes it really cost prohibitive!

I still go back and use my platesetter for pizza and baking. I don't know why, but I do. Extra thermal mass I 'spose. Seems like one or the other is always in the egg and the other is sitting next to it.

it would be helpful for bread making with the thermal mass but thats the only cook i think its needed for. i dont make a lot of breads so i dont have one but i know the few times ive made bread boules it would have been useful to get those temps up quicker

Since you have the AR, wouldn't the 14 or 16 inch pizza stone above the fire ring work for your indirect piece just as well? Then you would be cooking on the AR all of the time. Seems like those stones would be easier to handle than the plate setter.

The reason I love my large plate setter is I went to Wally world and bought their 16" pizza tray and I sit it inside the plate setter when the feet are up. It fits perfect and gets rid of those areas where the plate setter cuts in and ends up burning anything that hangs over. The edges of the pizza tray bend up slightly so there's still an air gap but it gives you pretty much the whole grate to work with and you don't have to foil the ends of whatever you are cooking.
