Third Hand
Does anyone have one they would like to part with?
Would someone trace one on a piece of paper and e-mail me so I can try making one. I can't weld, but I can talk my brother into giving it a try.

Maybe NOLA can do it. He's pretty good at drawing.

Nola - hahahahahaRagtop - dude, it's just a bent piece of metal. It's not too difficult, don't overthink it. At any rate, I've attached pics (credit to ThirdEye for the pics). Also, here's a few alternatives:Ya wanna know what I use? The "hook" side of this: http://www.searsoutlet.com/Brush-Hawg/d/product_details.jsp?md=ct_md&cid=1361&pn=1&ps=24&pid=14046&mode=buyUsedOnly&itemSelectionType=allIt works!! Just anything to pick up the grid & move it. The only benefit I can see to ThirdEye's idea is that it has a built-in way to hang the grid as well (but I already took care of that when I built my table, so to me, I don't need that capability).Anyway, HTH,HHDon't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. HaHa, that's a less gruesome drawing than I expected to find in this thread.
HTH, the ability to grab and temporarily hang a hot grid is the functionality that I was looking for.

Do you have a table? Can you put a hook or something on your table to hang the grid? If you have an outdoor kitchen w/ maybe a pergola, how about installing some hooks on that?
Have you checked out my table? http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1143519/hhs-table-finally-done-w-some-egg-o-vative-design-elements#latest
I tried to incorporate solutions for all the issues we face when Egging, including what to do w/ hot grids. Perhaps it can spark some ideas from you which will work in your cooking area.

hahahah...I forgot about that.
I use stainless steel tongs to remove a hot grate. I should make something. I think I will.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Peg board hangers is a clever idea.
95% of the time, I just grab the grid and set it on my gas grill (when the grate is hot) or hang it from an S hook on the eggmates (when the grate is cold). The appeal of the third hand was to grab my 18" CI grid when it is hot (e.g. pre-heated to TRex) so that I can adjust the coals or toss in the mesquite and be able to hang it if the gas grill is in use as a warmer.
it looked like a cool toy and I've only heard good things about. I can guess at the dimensions based upon the photo, I just thought someone might have one which would make it easy to copy.

Another option is to use the one like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbecue-Lifter/dp/B000EO0XTU
And then just use the hook/loop thingy that is on the handle & hang the whole thing from a hook. That way you have the grid lifter and the grid hanging from a hook.
Just another thought - I'm sure you'll figure something out - that's the cool thing about posting questions on the forum, you get many sets of eyes on a problem, and many suggestions!!

The third hand is a very nice, elegant tool. It appears that the tools are so useful and well made that he's overwhelmed with orders. I did manage to get one from Wayne about three weeks ago (I just emailed him and asked to be put on the next waiting list). It took about a month to arrive. That being said there is more than one way to lift a grid (I used the channel lock pliers before the third hand)

ash tool works just fine

abpqwold, I can't say I've ever heard a ThirdHand referred to as elegant, thanks for the kind words.
Ragtop - For now, my waiting list is open again and I have about 30 in inventory. Can't say how long they will last, they have been going like hotcakes. Try hitting the "refresh" button on your browser if you are getting the "Waiting List Is Closed" message.

Found one of these laying around...works great!!!

woot! It looks like I got an order in.
The garden tool is another neat idea. The hole at the top could be enlarged to feed an S hook through it and hang using the holes in the eggmates.

I have one of these and it works great. I tilt mine just a hair and hang it on to the hooks on the side of my table. The weld is pretty cheap on the bottom. Mine broke so I had it redone. The new weld will definitely stand the test of time.Mark Annville, PA -
I bumped into this one on eBay and remembered this thread. Looks comparable to a Third Hand.Mike

This from LawnRanger works real good and for a lot of years for me.

I always thought it was a Leg, not a hand - what do I know.

"thirdeye's invention will allow you to hang the hot grid"
I use the BGE grid lifter and place the hot grate on a couple of bricks on the deck or on the marble cutting board on top of my table till it cools.
Before I got the BGE lifter I used a small pry bar as a grid lifter/charcoal stirrer/ash tool.

I'm glad I got the third hand.
I use it on most cooks as I add my wood chunk(s) after the egg is warm and the grid is hot. It handles the weight of an 18" CI grate with ease too.
