After seeing the review of Michael's Custom Grillworks grates the other day on the Whiz' site I decided it was time to upgrade my first LBGE to stainless.  I also needed a couple of medium grates to use with my new grid extenders from the group buy.  Well, they arrived today and let me tell you they are really nice and super heavy duty!  Michael was a pleasure to work with and can be reached at 479-313-1600.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Sounds like a great product. There is demand for a medium SS Grate, so I'm floating the idea of somehow getting a group buy going. I talked to Michael this morning and he was definitely open to the idea.

I had Michael make me a grate for my large last year out of 3/8" stainless.  Very good guy to deal with and the grate blows my old ci grate out of the water.  I plan on getting one for my XL as well when funds permit.  These 3/8" grates will last a couple lifetimes.

I recently asked a question about SS vs Cast Iron on my FB page.  I'd like to hear more specifics about how your 3/8 grate blows away the cast iron.  A lot of folks really love cast iron.  Thanks!

I got my first egg in '03 and thought I would love the ci grate, but really didn't.  A few things I liked about the stainless better are:

Food doesn't stick to the stainless nearly as bad.

I don't have to worry about the stainless rusting if 1 egg is getting more use than the other.

The stainless is easier to clean.

The stainless may be able to get hotter on the outside (transfer heat more) than the ci, but I don't think it holds heat as well.  I was finding with the ci, even at lower temps, the outside of certain food was getting done way before the inside.

This may be a minute detail, but the stainless grate is easier to pickup than the ci, and Michael can make the stainless larger diameter than the ci so it has less of a gap around the edge.

How much would one expect to pay for this SS grate for a LBGE?

The DudeThis is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

If you want one with 1/4" rods, it is $85.  The 3/8" grid was (I think) $160.  Don't quote me on that.  You would need to call up Michael's Custom Grill Works to see.  (And of course, shipping.)

Another advantage - you drop that CI grate once and it'll break.  The stainless will remain unscathed.

Yes, I forgot that one.  Don't know how I did, as I dropped my ci and it broke.

Unless you're The Naked Whiz. Apparently, he likes to throw things.
