Hello Vance,
One of the worst fuels to use in a Big Green Egg....$8.99 is too much!
Do yourself a favor and switch to a better fuel.

This is all I ever use....too much hype charcoal

In the famous words of stike "it's all carbon and it all burns" I say burn pennies instead of dollars
-
Smitty ?, Why is mesquite bad for the egg.
-
Mesquite is my fav. I use almost nothing else. Some mesquite are better than others. At $8.99 per 40lbs, it would have to be pretty bad for me to turn my nose up.Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here.

If anyone can tell me why mesquite is "bad fuel", I'm all ears. The only thing about cheap mesquite is that it sparks a lot when getting started and can have a lot of dust and shake in the bag. I use it all the time and it's great for the money. I use boutique lump too and I like it better but it's more than twice the price. I'm with Travis- $8.99 for 40lb? Bring on the sparksKeepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

Another vote for cheap mesquite lump here. I have tried most of them and don't see the value in the more expensive stuff. But I am frequently wrong and didn't really get into BBQ to save money. Whatever make you happy...-----------I feel a whole lot more like I do now than I did when I got here.

" and didn't really get into BBQ to save money."Excellent point. I think my brisket is like $50 per lb when all is said and done. Franklin's is like $13...........Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

True enough-but try to export that to the rest of us- we just have to suck it up and give it our best shot while having too much fun trying to get to the brisket "promised land". And it's still the journey after too many years in the land of the soon to be world famous Kentucky Jelly >-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Mesquite is simply the harshest tasting fuel you can use. Great for fast grilling (10 minutes or less) you need a strong flavor with this type of cooking, or you get no flavor. Also fine to use on a open pit such as a Santa Maria type pit, as the open air flow doesn't concentrate the flavor over the food.
If you use it and like it, go for it. I opt for a better flavor for our smoke on our long cooks.
