Good Calories, Bad Calories

I've been seeing a lot of posts about "healthy" foods in here lately... I thought I'd throw out a great book I read last year which has completely changed my perception on what "healthy" is.
Like most of you, I previously looked to the governmental recommendations about low fat, low cholesterol, etc. guidelines -- and what you hear from doctors. However, if you look back in history and the science that went into those guidelines, you'll find that ... there wasn't any real science involved! Politics and ego were highly involved, however.
The book is called Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes http://www.amazon.com/Good-Calories-Bad-Controversial-Science/dp/1400033462/ref=ed_oe_p. It's not a diet book, but a science history book that goes into great detail about the progression of science that has gone into both governmental recommendations as well as the obesity epidemic. It's not light reading, but it's highly persuasive and an incredible read.

Yup ! That's a great blog -- it's one of the RSS feeds I actually bother to stop and read when a new post pops up!

Just finished reading Gary Taubes' new book, Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It. I was looking for more information, and found this old posting. The Eades blog looks really good. Thanks for the tip!

This is an area that I have been involved in research, writing and personal experience.
Let me know if I can be of any help.

it's the truth. i don't know how the human species has made it this far apparently not knowing how to eat. thank god we were born in a period where we have people writing books that can teach us how to consume food properly without either starving, or becoming morbidly obese. that sweet spot, where a person eats when they are hungry, and doesn't eat when they aren't hungry, and only eats what their lifestyle requires, is a tricky one, from what i understand.
pro tip: don't under eat. don't over eat. eat decent food.

so true, but for me moderation is my problem! I read books like this for reinforcement ( AND TO KEEP ME IN A 20 LB WINDOW OF WEIGHT )

I'm reading The Paleo Solution by Rob Wolf. Looks like a winner so far.

I am on a self-modified version of the Atkins Diet. I eat all I want to eat. I have cut out sugar and refined carbs. I minimize things such as rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. I have lost 19 pounds since Easter.
I say that sugar, gluten, and refined starches are "bad" calories.

I go on the wagon and loose 15 lbs in no time. This only happens once or twice a year. What this world needs is low calorie alcohol. My actuary says I'm dead.

I too do the modified Atkins...very little bread, rice, potato etc...a salad with most meals, drink a lot of water.....no junk food. Fortunately I drink very little alcohol and have learned that exercise is easy once you get in the habit. I have lost about 18 pounds since the first of the year.
