I spent $20. Will you?

I've been eyeing up this thermometer for the last month or two. I've been using the Javelin Pro Duo the last 5 years with zero issues. My older Thermapen may have finally kicked the bucket. I have a couple ThermoPops that I could pull out of packaging but I have no real interest in that style to be completely honest. They will probably make a nice gift for someone else at some point.
The reviews for the ThermoMaven look promising and I've watched a video or two with positive reviews. It's an easy gamble being in sale for $20. I don't know how long they will be on sale but it might be worth jumping on if someone is in need.

I had that exact model and the probe snapped off on the third use and just dangled by the wires. When it did work it was kinda slow to read and if I’m doing a smoke I don’t like sitting around for a reading with the lid open for a long time. I mostly bought it for the name Maven.

Well that's odd. Are you sure it was the exact model? It's a one second read time. I'm curious how it could be slow and what are you using now that might be quicker? The reviews seem promising. It would give a number instantly but then creep up or down by several degrees for 5-10 seconds. That is a lot if you are probing several different items. I have actually pulled back on temp checks until the end of a cook now, but I’m in the market for a set of the Bluetooth wireless probes.

Mine comes in tomorrow. I'll have to try a test between my Javelin Pro Duo and the Thermomaven."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

Not to get cross-ways on a Thursday (need Friday for that) but low&slow Q cooks are analog (not a digital experience) and speed of the read is no big deal. Hot&fast a whole different ball-game and I get the need for the quick read, especially if cave-man.
I need this even less than the pocket knife rabbit hole @WeberWho served up a couple of years ago and I succumbed to that vortex. I have three instant read thermos (Thermapen and Javelin Pro-Duo along with a low end Javelin) and will sit this one out although for the performance and price point it's a great deal.

One of the strengths of the Thermapen is the longevity of their products. Another is the excellent customer service Thermoworks provides. I'm almost certain they'll be able to help with your old Thermapen, for a reasonable cost. Or, ping @Canugghead, and y'all should be able to fix it between the two of you
I've been happy with the the Javelin Pro, and a couple of their other products (now discontinued).
I'm not a fan of bluetooth thermos for outside cookers. The stated range is usually overly optimistic, and connectivity varies.
Having said all that, $20 isn't a big dent. And, should be easy to return if it doesn't meet the mark.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

My Thermapen must be pushing 15 years old. That thing doesn't owe me a dime. Worth every penny. (I'll take it apart at some point as it's probably fixable.) The hard part is that it's old technology without all the bells and whistles that the new thermometers have.
For $20 I'll take the gamble with all the positive reviews. Longevity will be the real question.

I exclusively use thermapen. They last a long time, customer service is top notch and they are often on sale for $60. Thermapops are usually available for $25.

My 2 horses in this race are both Thermapens. One is now 25 years old and the youngster is 23. The only reason I bought the second one is because it was waterproof and that summer it rained a lot. Here's the remarkable things - both are dead on in agreement and both are still on their original batteries!!!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!

before I quit egging I picked up a inkbird IHT-1P - it's magnetic, rechargable, fast and only cost me $30 (likely $20 stateside). I like it a lot.~~

Thermopop for instantish read.
Picked up these https://chefiq.com/products/iq-sense at Costco one day. I only use them a few times a year (recently easter ham) but they work very well.XLBGE, LBGE, Charbroil Gas Grill, Weber Q2000, Old Weber Kettle, Rectec RT-B380, Yeti 65, Yeti Hopper 20, RTIC 20, RTIC 20 Soft Side - Too many drinkware vessels to mention.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting. The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president. -
The Thermometer showed up early this morning. I was able to get a few pictures before heading out this morning.
The Thermomaven was quicker than the Javelin Pro Duo in the initial reading but it wasn't really a fair test between the two as I grabbed the Javelin Pro Duo from a 40 degree garage a minute or two prior. Reading the ambient air temperature between the two isn't really a fair comparison. Too many variables. I'll have to do a boil test when I have some more time. Kind of fun seeing how two cheap thermometers stack up against one another."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan
