Happy Veterans Day to you brother Cap. I don’t want to derail your thread so I will keep a very civil and toned down tongue. But we all have good reason to be celebrating now. Everyday will be a holiday for the next few years 🥳
Again, Happy Veterans Day to you and a special thanks for your service.

I was thinking about today, while driving home after work.

We toured the USS- Cavalla (SS-244) in Galveston, TX earlier this year. I remember being in awe of why a bunch of folks would sign up for a gig like that.

Can't recall all the eggheads who have served, but thanks to all of you for your service:

    Thank y'all.
It's been a while since the war in 'Nam got me into the service and times were a little different back then. Eventually, though, a machine pretending to be President Nixon signed my discharge certificate and I was free.

Started active duty in USN 06/03/1969. Total active service was 4 years, 4 months and 28 days according to my DD214N. Spent 1 year, 4 months and 3 days of that in foreign and/or sea service, some of that off Guantanamo Bay and the rest in the Mediterranean Sea.

    Thanks Ashish,

@LOUSUBCAP, @SSN686, @SSN615, @SUBVET62, @SUBVET, @SubVet585, and myself, (and probably more I’m unaware of), signed up for that gig. Granted service on modern SSN/SSBNs was much different than serving on the old pig boats, but we all still breathed recycled farts. 😎

    We're a diminishing crowd, that's for sure:
There are 15.8 million veterans alive in the US today, about 6.1% of the adult US population. Roughly one-third served in the Vietnam War, one-quarter in the Gulf War, and 28% serving since 9/11, the rest in peacetime. The percentage of veterans alive today who served in World War II is less than 0.2%.

Cincinnati, Ohio. Large BGE since 2011. Still learning.

     No beans on submarines!

I met a veteran submariner today (brought his grandaughter to be seen by me). He told he'd be deployed "submerged, and undetected" for 90 days, then on terra firma for 90 days. Submariners are a bit more metal.

Yep- and as I have always said, "You have to be crazy to join and insane to stay."  But during the Cold War is was great fun.  We came, we saw and we kicked their a$$.  And they knew it.
BTW-beans were not considered an atmospheric contaminant.

Sounds like a boomer sailor. I did two tours on boomers, and two on fast attacks. Boomer life was better as mentioned above, but we did some really cool **** on fast attacks.

If that kind of stuff interests you, read Blind Man’s Bluff. It is a history of US submarines during the Cold War. This country did some amazing things, such as Operation Ivy Bells, and a certain forum member may or may not have first hand knowledge of.

I don't know what the Army equivalent of "surfacing" is, but glad to see you do it.
