Ed Currie of Ft. Mill, SC officially broke his own record in the Guinness Book of World Records today with the whopping 2.693 million Scoville unit Pepper X.

My favorite part of the video was when Chili Klaus was at a loss of mental clarity and stated he was “in heat.”  😂 Video gets good about 10 minutes in.

Good to see they'd come up with a less subjective rating measurement than this; Wiki needs an update:

Agree @Botch .  Too much bias in the taster approach.

I personally don’t see the appeal to anything past a habanero, other than novelty. The reapers I grew once tasted decent after lacto fermentation for a hot sauce, but that was likely due to the other ingredients as well. I originally made a hot sauce with them straight up and it tasted like garbage and had intolerable heat. Made for a great deer deterrent though.  Had a very large yield of peaches and pears that year. 😆

It is interesting how our tastes change over time.  One of my first TDYs (business trip) as a shiny new 2nd Lieutenant was from Dayton to Orlando, with a connection in Atlanta.  I got some nachos in ATL, was asked if I wanted “jalapeños” (growing up in Sioux Falls in the 70’s, never heard of them); I said “Sure!”  They about killed me, had two beers on the short flight to Orlando, and missed a couple hours of the conference the next morning because I was ceramic-throned, tears running down my cheeks.
Got used to “some” heat in Albuquerque, but had to dump a pot of stew with just 3 minced habañeros (again, pickled) as it was too hot.  Am now making Jamaican Jerk cheekun with two fresh habs, they’re hot but I like them.
I really have no desire to go hotter; I’m guessing my increased tolerance is due to both experience, and old age (although my desire for salt is decreasing with age, supposed to be the other direction).  Dunno.

i stopped using jalapenos in chili along time ago. prefer habanero, scotch bonnets, and always have some dried scorpion/reaper/ghost for added profile flavor in chili, nachos etc.  jalapenos are good for abt's and queso dip.

younger days, pretty sure i ate homemade indian rice with ghost, was just not ready for that at the time. your taste does change over time

during covid i made a corner of super nachos called karens corner with ghost and scorpion, its true that you can lose your taste ability with covid. still worked the next morning with karen =)

Chocolate Habaneros, roughly twice as hot as a regular habanero, is as hot as I go. I only use them in ones and twos for cooking though. I plant them every 3 or 4 years and freeze the crop.

That reminds me of a few years ago. I planted several hot peppers. One plant was obviously one of the super hots whose name escapes me. I told my Dad that was an “Eat this and you die pepper “ . My nephews father in law at the time was there talking to my Dad and my Dad was telling him what the peppers were. He took that as a challenge and popped one in his mouth. He had to circle the entire 5 acre property before he recovered enough to speak. Since my nephew ended up divorcing his daughter for very good reasons, I don’t regret it. I kind of wish that he had swallowed it and seared his hemeroids off.

I prefer Carolina Reapers over scorpions.  I find scorpions are a bit to sweet for my preference.  Almost likr an "off-fruit" flavor that I don't really like.

I love Carolina Reapers though.  I usually put a few in my lacto ferments.  Add just enough zip to my veggies.

I grow many many reapers (as well as others) in a driveway container garden I set up. I’ll never grow in the ground again, I’m deep freezing a hundred peppers at a time over here..

the reason I like the reaper is to add heat to sauces that already have a good flavor. Lots of times, with my hot sauces, adding heat changes the flavor away.

Reapers add heat without removing flavor.

Oh - and it’s never more than ONE REAPER PER BATCH TOPS lol

i may make a sauce soon with only reapers to shut my friends up who say that heat doesn’t bother them…

As a young lad out on motorcycles with another couple, we stopped at a dimly lit dive bar. We all ordered hot dogs at the bar and I asked about condiments and the bartender pointed to a wall rack (along side the pool table) where I found ketchup, mustards, onions relish etc. I lathered up my hot dog and dove in. I had never eaten a hot pepper of any kind in my northern WI life. The problem soon reared it's ugly head, you see that weren't relish on that gourmet wall rack but chopped jalapenos! I was in serious pain and the bartender really helped me with water then milk and I vowed after that episode that this would not happen to me again. I began a path of getting used to and increasing my tolerance to hot sauces and peppers My boys also followed me on that journey and we were in several hot sauces of the month clubs. Although I can eat hot peppers, many still can cause too much pain for my appetite. Habaneros are about as hot as I like nowadays and are the mainstay on the kitchen table.
That little green jalapeno sure taught that young lad quite a lesson!

I just don't get it. I like a little heat. The operative word being little. As soon as the heat overshadows the flavors it's wasted. If I want a runny nose, watery eyes, and gastrointestinal distress I'll eat some E.coli.

Am saving that to watch this weekend.

Bet it’ll be great (though still not as good as the Gordon Ramsay epdisode - anyone who hasn’t seen it really should 😂).

Ed Curry has gained some serious respect after watching that.  Holy cow, the guy is able to talk after eating that pepper.  Says it lasts about 2.5 hours and is able to describe the sensations while everyone else is literally trying not to lose consciousness.  Unbelievable.

  • Watching it now. Ed doesn’t react at all. Incredible. Wifey ordering me a bottle of Xperience as we speak.

For me, it’s a bit of a fun, personal challenge. Much like lifting weights - which I also enjoy - it’s about testing your limits and seeing yourself get stronger in the process, which is painful. Being able to enjoy both heat and flavour comes through building tolerance, I think. Personally, other than the heat in the moment, I’ve never had any of the symptoms you describe, though I’m sure some aren’t so lucky!

He's been developing hot peppers for so long he's become immune. Kinda like an old beekeeper that never even notices/feels when they get stung.

Just a theory, but I often wonder if it comes down to expectations. Get stung enough times, or ride the pepper burn enough times, and you know where it leads and how you get there. Hit repeat and you simply no longer react, because you’re still solidly on the tracks you’ve travelled so many times.

I can imagine it’s the dopamine release that has him obsessed with the hobby.  My esophagus became inflamed just watching it though.

Will have to look for that one tonight.  Another hilarious one was Sam the Cooking Guy and his boys set up the cameras and all took the "Paqui Chip Challenge"; they were hurting, and at one point Sam screams, "YOU!  You did this!!" like a first-time Mom giving birth, to her husband.
