Seriously, before I rage quit and throw it in the creek behind the house.
I CANNOT get this top to stay on. Every time I open it the lid falls out of the band.
I have even gone out and new bands (nothing wrong with the old ones) and still it falls apart on open.

Tighten the bands until the bolts are bending.  I have yet to hear of someone breaking a lid by overtighting it.

This ^^^. Something something... radial forces... something something.

If that doesn't work, I would bail on the BGE bidness, and invest in another cooker. I say this seriously. No cooker is worth aggravation.

I can't get them any tighter without putting an extension on the wrench. Seriously, the 'ears' get pretty close to touching

I would, but I cooked on this thing for many years without this problem. When I took it apart to replace the gasket is when all this started. I can't figure it out, if I did it once, why can't I get it the second time?

Whatever you do, under no circumstances whatsoever use your own computer to go onto Google and search for self-help videos on "how to tighten your own nuts".  Trust me on this one.

OK, I put it back on and thought I was in the clear when I found one of the screws that attach the hinge to the band was broken. Replaced it, but same issue. This time it didn't fall TOTALLY out of the band, you can can see where the band slipped on the lid and the lid shifted enough to leave a big gap in the back. There is also a pic of how tight the band bolt was before I tried to open it.

This must be an after picture, but make sure someone puts pressure on the top while you tighten and the bands can be tightened significantly more.

Yes, after. The bands are not moving when tightening, you mean downward pressure? FYI, the bottom band doesn't move at all through this process, its always the top that pops out when opening

I honestly think you need to tighten them more. Here is what mine looks like.

Holy smokes the top is barely in the the band. Loosen up and start over.

Also is yours a large?  Something looks off about the hinge compared to this:

Almost like your bands are flipped around or upside down or something.  Not sure, yours does look like Ozzie’s pic after further review — but he may not the standard (kidding Oz).

Yes, apply downward pressure to make sure the dome is fully seated. Also, if those are the same bolts from when you took it off, run down to the hardware store and get new bolts and nuts.

Recently when I installed new bands on my 23 year old Large my bands kept slipping right down and forcing my dome upward. This was my thread of my solution. You might find it of some help.

Its an XL. Do you think the hinges are backwards?  I may jump off something tall if it was that all along

Spoke too soon. Everything seemed to be fine, so I threw some veggies on there to grill. Opened and closed it a few times, the gap in back developed, and on the final attempts it popped right out.
I literally cannot get the band any tighter. I

That top band should be snug against the upper ridge. Still too much space there imho.

How old is it? XLs had a tapering issue a few years back and the bands wouldn’t stay put. They kept sliding off. It was a defect in the ceramic mold. Mine being one of the defective units.

I would ask the dealer to talk with their distributor about it.

I overtightened on one of my MiniMaxes and it caused some chipping under the band at the front due to the pressure. You don’t see it at all with the band on, but it taught me that the ceramic has its limits.

It looks to me like his dome has some tapering in the band flange area. It could be a trick of the light but...

there appears to be a shadow line which I take to be a ridge and on the very left where there is some chipping it appears to be where the band slipped along that ridge. I don't know if that is a normal thing for an XL (if it actually is a tapering point and not just a trick of the light).

Tomorrow, go to a quality hardware store and buy 2 new sets of high strength nuts and bolts and start over. Bend the tabs back on band a little so the square bolt anti twist will fit more flush.
Tighten nut with a deep socket and put a crescent wrench on the band tab holding the band on the bolt head side to stop the band from twisting too much when tightening.
Crank it down very tight. Yet to see a post with cracked dome due to tightening too tight.
‘Your threads might be worn enough on bolt and nut that they are actually jumping threads.
    Thank you,

What's weird is that you didn't have this issue until you took it apart. @Photo Egg may be on to something about the bolts... yours look different from the ones generally in the wild. Did you happen to replace them when you installed the gasket?

They are the bolts that came with the new bands. I bought some new ones thinking they must have bent or gotten mis-shapen from heat over the years. There was nothing wrong with them on inspection, but I am working with the new ones anyway.

The dome is newer than the egg. It was replaced under warranty a few years ago. Maybe 5.
