    Wednesday TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LITIGATION

"A federal judge yesterday ordered the Trump administration to reinstate $12 million in funding allocated by Congress to Radio Free Europe, a pro-democracy media organization facing the threat of closure for the first time in its 75-year history. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth underscored the importance of maintaining the constitutional balance of power, and said the Trump administration could not unilaterally revoke Congressionally-approved funding. Michael Kunzelman reports for the Associated Press; Minho Kim reports for the New York Times.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) yesterday sued the Trump administration and several officials for attempting to dismiss three members of its board. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and argues Trump administration officials lack executive authority to remove CPB board members. The case comes amid rising tensions between CPB and the Trump administration, which is aiming to cut funding for PBS and NPR — the two biggest U.S. public broadcasters. The court issued a ruling yesterday afternoon blocking the CPB directors’ firings, pending a hearing set for May 14. Sara Fischer reports for Axios; Benjamin Mullin reports for the New York Times.

A federal judge in California ruled yesterday that the Trump administration must continue to provide funding for lawyers representing unaccompanied migrant children, at least temporarily. The preliminary injunction means funding will continue while the case against the administration — brought by nonprofits — continues, after the administration terminated parts of a contract that allocates congressionally approved funds to legal service providers assisting children in navigating the immigration court system. Victoria Albert reports for the Wall Street Journal.

Over 20 states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration yesterday challenging the dismantling of AmeriCorps, the federal agency focused on volunteerism that addresses needs ranging from poverty to disaster recovery programs. Aishvarya Kavi reports for the New York Times.

A lawsuit alleging the Trump administration is deporting people for holding pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel views can proceed to trial, a federal judge ruled yesterday, stating that the academic groups who challenged the practice had “plausibly alleged” that their members were being “targeted specifically for exercising their right to political speech.” Josh Gerstein, Kyle Cheney, and Hassan Ali Kanu report for POLITICO."

Problem is the acolytes believe the above.  Too bad Bezos caved on the tariff price addition info to the bottom line cost you pay. Of course it was political, just as is this dumb$hit move.
Now if all car manufacturers made the same move the crying and moaning would set records.

    Thursday TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LITIGATION

"The federal judge overseeing the case of Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland resident mistakenly sent to a prison in El Salvador, has rejected the Trump administration’s motion to further delay answering questions about its removal of Abrego García and what steps, if any, it has taken to secure his return. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis’s order has set new deadlines for an accelerated discovery process, including depositions of four Trump administration officials. Separately, the Trump administration recently sent a diplomatic note to El Salvador’s officials, seeking information about García’s arrest, according to three anonymous sources. However, the authoritarian government of President Nayib Bukele reportedly rejected the request and argued he should remain in El Salvador, citing his Salvadoran citizenship. Steve Thompson reports for the Washington Post; Michael S. Schmidt, Alan Feuer, Zolan Kanno-Youngs, Maggie Haberman, and Maria Abi-Habib report for the New York Times

A federal judge in Vermont ordered the release of Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi while his case is ongoing, ruling that the Trump administration was attempting to deport lawful residents for expressing political opinions. Mahdawi, a green-card holder who organized pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia, was released on the condition that he appear at all future court hearings. Comparing the Trump administration’s actions in threatening deportation for expressions of political opinions to the McCarthy era, Judge Geoffrey Crawford said, “We certainly saw it in the Red Scare.” Alyssa Lukpat reports for the Wall Street Journal

A federal judge yesterday denied the Justice Department’s request for an early release of a former FBI informant who pleaded guilty to lying about Hunter Biden and evading his taxes, stating that the circumstances remained unchanged. Alexander Smirnov admitted in December to lying about a bribery scheme involving former President Biden and his son, receiving a six-year sentence. Before his admission, Republican lawmakers and Trump ally Kash Patel — now FBI director — had amplified his false claims during efforts to impeach Biden and influence the 2024 campaign. Devlin Barrett reports for the New York Times.

A federal judge yesterday ordered the Trump administration to allow migrants to raise any safety concerns such as a fear of torture before being deported to El Salvador or other countries, rather than their home countries. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston issued the ruling after immigrant rights advocates argued that the administration had violated a previous court order by flying four Venezuelans from the U.S. naval base in Cuba to El Salvador on a flight arranged by the Department of Defense. Nate Raymond reports for Reuters."

    Friday TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LITIGATION

"A Trump-appointed federal judge ruled yesterday that the president overstepped his authority and “exceed[ed] the scope” of the Alien Enemies Act in trying to swiftly deport Venezuelan migrants, dealing a setback to the administration’s deportation efforts and permanently halting such removals in South Texas until an expected appeal by the administration to the Fifth Circuit. In a 36-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. wrote, “The President cannot summarily declare that a foreign nation or government has threatened or perpetrated an invasion or predatory incursion of the United States, followed by the identification of the alien enemies subject to detention or removal.” Maria Saacchetti and Marianne LeVine report for the Washington Post; Kyle Cheney reports for POLITICO.

A federal appeals court in Washington yesterday ruled that, for the time being, the Trump administration could continue withholding funding from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, and Middle East Broadcasting Networks, all of which are federally funded organizations that provide news coverage to regions with restricted press freedoms. The order was an administrative stay, temporarily halting a lower-court ruling until the appeals court judges decide whether to overturn it. However, the appeals court also upheld parts of a lower court ruling, which mandated that Trump administration officials reinstate journalists at Voice of America, another federally funded news organization, and resume the media oulet’s news programming. Minho Kim reports for the New York Times.

The Trump administration yesterday asked the Supreme Court to allow it to revoke protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan immigrants who had been permitted to stay in the United States without the threat of deportation, under a program known as the Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In February, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem ended an 18-month extension of TPS, granted to Venezuelans by the Biden administration. Those affected by the decision filed a lawsuit, arguing that the move violated administrative procedures and was influenced by racial bias, and the district court ruled in their favor on those grounds. Adam Liptak reports for the New York Times.

A new lawsuit has been filed against DOGE, alleging that the group is now targeting the National Endowment for the Humanities for elimination. The legal challenge seeks judicial intervention to prevent Musk’s team from advancing plans to strip away Congressional funding allocated to support the endowment’s cultural and educational initiatives. The complaint specifically names Nate Cavanaugh, a prominent member of the DOGE team, who has spearheaded efforts to defund and dismantle several independent, Congressionally established institutions. Most recently, Cavanaugh is said to have played a key role in the takeovers of both the U.S. Institute of Peace and the U.S. African Development Foundation, aiming to gain control over their operations. Zach Montague reports for the New York Times."

Saban had a great message at the Bama graduation.  all about don’t blame anybody but yourself. make the decisions daily to do the right/hard thing, be the best at what you choose to do, etc. Really the opposite of everything Trump represents every time he has a tantrum.  Then Saban graciously introduces trump.  It was a master class in how to handle that situation. thankful for trumps time etc without endorsing or detracting trump at all. polite and no bait taken or given. saban is almost mistake free on the mic.  saban probably votes with he tax bracket of course but he handled playing it straight with all aces.

also let’s just say— as bad as it is and all the really awful things in play — pouring a little sweet tea for everyone at the table in the south requires a lot less “turning a blind eye” in 2025 than 1965.
