Pulled Pork ideas

Greetings Fellow Eggheads -

I did a nice pork shoulder on The LBGE this week for some overnight guests. It turned out great. I did an overnight marinade with Malcom Reed's THE BBQ RUB with another dusting just prior to adding to the grill.  Fuel was Rockwood and a big double handful of golf ball size apple wood chunks. After 6 hours at 285° the bark was well set and the internal was up to about 170°. I put it in a foil pan and poured a few ounces of Apple Cider Vinegar in then covered it with foil for another couple hours. When I hit 205° internal I uncovered and mopped on a Peach Preserve/Molasses glaze and let it set up before removing to the oven to hold for dinner.

It was a hit. The meat just fell apart in the pan and made for delicious sandwiches. Now the challenge is how to use up the 5# of meat remaining. I took about a pound of it and added a Southwest themed spice mix (salt, sweet ancho pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, ground black pepper, Mexican oregano, cayenne red pepper, cumin, chipotle and dried cilantro) and we've had tacos twice already. I made Huevos Rancheros this morning too.

What's next? We'll freeze some but would like some ideas for other uses.

Nachos would be next on the list for me. Use the same stuff you used above adding some jalapeños, queso, fresh pico, guacamole, sour creme and drizzle a little bbq sauce over the top. Dang it, now I’m hungry again. Lol 🤪
  • Add some corn and black beans and hatch chilis to it. Some tomato product. Serve with pasta of choice. Add jalapeno if wanting some spice.

  • Leftover pulled pork is kinda like Forest Gump Shrimp--- you can make breakfast casserole, burritos, tacos, wraps, nachos, sliders, pizza, soup, sandwiches(with white bread), chili, mac n cheese, etc., etc.  Its kinda like a 5 gallon bucket- unlimited uses!

I suggest pulled pork pizza with bbq sauce for a base, shredded cheddar cheese and red onions to go along with the pulled pork.  It’s the best.

Seconded. I also like enchiladas, but it sounds like you’ve done tacos with it already.

  • Ok gents I have been inspired- I am roughing it tonight so here is my concoction.  Layered in this order-Tandoori garlic flatbread, John Boy and Billy's Grilling sauce, leftover pulled pork from the freezer, jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, baked in the oven(sorry, was lazy tonight -would have been better on the egg), topped with cilantro salsa and some sour cream and a cold beer.  Pretty dang good!  Should have added black beans and corn.  Sorry finished shot is all that's left!  Will definitely do again!

My 5 year old White West Highland Terrior aka Westie is 5.5 years old and is our 5th one of this beloved breed. Now with that said you also need to know that HE refused to eat the brand of dry food our other 4 boys scarfed down!

Then after years of trying different brands of canned food and SO MUCH other other foods then just 2 DAYS ago I mixed some left over pulled pork in his HALF can of dog food and B I N G O that boy scarfed it ALL down!

Guess we have yet ANOTHER fan of pulled pork!!!

Use an herbed olive oil for base.  Pulled pork, provolone, red onion, roasted garlic, and spinach.  Drizzle with warm BBQ sauce and scallions before serving.

@rrp.  Becareful with the rub choice, onion powder and garlic powder. Can be deadly to dogs, especially the small ones. My dogs eat it but I would be more concerned with smaller ones.  Just one grape killed my cousins jack last fall for instance, just the one

  • I usually make about 20lbs at a time. The wife and I then make meal portions out of what is left after dinner and freeze them for another day. I heats up well in our crockpot and we can have meals when we want. I do this with everything I cook including soups, stews, ribs, and whatever else.

Thanks, Mike, I did NOT know that! Since I really only add about 1.5 tablespoons at most of pulled pork to his plate I think we will be OK!

Sorry to hear about your cousin’s Jack Russell and I have never heard that a grape can kill a dog!!!

Any "dog" that is that fussy, deserves to be fed what was made for him: cat food.
And I didn't know that about garlic/onion powder either, thank you @fishlessman.

Regarding the OP's 3~4 meals in the Southwest vein already, I also would've suggested the Cubanos/Cuban sammiches.  Get some other "popping" flavors in there (ham, pickles, mustard, etc).

the butcher here uses ground pork, but i see no reason not to use pulled. the top hole is used to baste a pork dripping broth into the pie during the cook, it really makes the pie. i eat these all winter for breakfast. makes a dozen or so different styles served hot each morning but the pork is the mainstay. people from the area that moved hundreds of miles away return with coolers to stock up in bulk

Thanks for all the tips. We did Pulled Pork Pizza with some BBQ sauce blended in with the pizza sauce, minced onion, minced green pepper, and crushed pineapple. It was topped with fresh mozzarella and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. Way good. I'm looking forward to trying the Pork Pies.

this is the one i use, from djm5x9 back in the old forum days. made the mistake once just tossing the pull straight in, it turns to strings. either chop it into pieces the size of a thumb nail and add it late in the cook or better yet put it thru a very coarse grinder     richard saved the recipe for the forumm, my notes are all gone

Sure!  My preference is pork, black beans, sliced grape tomatoes, pickled jalapenos, cheddar cheese, sour cream, lettuce.  Roll it up and either cook it in a pan to get the tortilla crisp, or just dig in (if you don't cook it in a pan, warm up the pork).  Enjoy!!!
