Help - Replacing springs on lid

My Large BGE is probably 10+ years old, and the lid is not staying open...I purchased new springs to replace the old ones, but there must be a trick to installing them...they are super strong/tight, how do you stretch them enough to connect both ends?? Or do you somehow disassemble the egg more (remove bands or something) first??

Here is what I do.

Bend them and stuff pennies between the coils to make them longer. A vise and pliers make this easier.

Then, carefully open the lid and install the spring.  When you close the lid, the pennies will fall to the ground.

Are you sure you got the correct springs for the old model? The spring/lid assembly for the new model is entirely different.

There was a ghost thread that popped up earlier this week about this exact thing. Seemed like tightening a few nuts was the fix

with the large its usually th bolt that the lower spring hook connects to, it needs to be perpendicular with the hinge bracket it attaches to. tighten the inner nut hard against the bracket. egg tilting slightly forward doesnt help, check it with a level. to pry new springs on, its easier with someone holding the dome open, wear safety glasses. i just pry them on with a screwdriver dome open

Thanks for all the suggestions.  @Langner91 the penny trick was brilliant and got to where I could get the springs back on (but ultimately it was the loose nuts as the other thread pointed out).

Glad to hear.  And, if you ever need to replace the spring on a Harley kickstand, you know how to do it!

Loose nuts do become an issue at a certain age...

ok, this penny thing brought back memories........dorm door was penny locked one night, there was banging at the door. went back to sleep. in the morning i got out the window, went around and this was what i found outside my door banging on it. someone really worked hard getting this from a store front into a dorm....funny as hell

I may or may not have known a group of 10-12 farm kids that picked up some marble statutes that were imported from France and moved across campus. These marble statues weighed thousands of pounds. The next morning the campus was supposed to reveal these statue's to the local news outlets as they were a big deal. They campus had no way to move these statue's without renting some big crane last second and most likely wouldn't be able to do this before the reveal ceremony. Campus had a pretty good idea who was behind this prank. They may or may not have been correct. They offered these farm kids many, many cases of beer for these statue's to be placed back before the reveal. Good thing these farm kids were able to help out. It's almost like they've done it before.....
