Every base or dome warranty I have received came with a fresh gasket on it.

I’m still holding out hope for this thread.
I have the "Louisville Kentucky" thread in the Pre-Memorial-Day pool.  I am liking my chances!

But, this one has potential to go sideways, too.

The Louisville Kentucky thread had me laughing pretty hard at times. Sheesh .... over what really?. I try not to get all stressed out by stupid sh!t like that. Life is too damned short ... I've been through hell and back already .. and I'd much rather stay on the lighter side of things than get my panties In a wad over stupid crap like that.

If the new base comes with a gasket, I'd just use it until it fails.

Then, get a Rutland gasket from Ron, and apply it to the lid. The base fails more often than the lid. Unless you're careless.

Thanks for your input.  I do give anesthesia for a living , however I am a CRNA.  Why do you ask? My handle give it away? 😂

I'm a lazy arse. So, installing on the lid, and not having to spend time installing another one after the base breaks, is well worth it to me.

Credit: Got this idea from @Eggcelsior way back when.
Due to this undeniable force called gravity then it is difficult, if not impossible, to install a Rutland on the dome without first removing the dome from the bands! That permits easy application with the assistance of said gravity. Some people have difficulty re-adjusting their bands and getting proper alignment...but hey...once purchased it's your gasket so do it however you want!
Yep. I'm well aware of that thing called gravity. And, that one has to undo the bands (at least on one side) when replacing a base.

6 of one, half dozen of the other?

I thought maybe you had put it on the dome when you lived in the South Pole where gravity is upside down...

So you have successfully applied a rutland to the top? Makes perfect  sense if you have to dismantle the egg anyway. Works the same , I’m assuming ?

I think it works better.  Any food or drippings when handling food land on the bare ceramic and clean up easily.

I thought the buildup of drippings/grease on a Rutland installed on the base was a good thing as it "gunks up" the gasket which helps prevent the potentially carcinogenic/mutagenic fibers from the "not safe for use around food" gasket material blowing/falling onto your food.
When installed on the dome the gasket does not "gunk up" as much and is more likely to shed those nasty fibers down onto your food.
At least that was the wisdom/advice I recall reading before. Personally, I wouldn't be concerned either way.

    Yup.

Re: shedding of carcinogenic fibers, etc. onto your food… iffn that happens, have it on good authority, that you’ll only rent them, not own them. You’ll poop them out before they can do you any harm.  What goes in, will soon come out. Quite different from inhaling them.

Don’t let folks make you overthink this.

I hear you, Doctor...but even if people do as I suggest and NEVER put their gasket on the dome...then at my cheap $11 price why fret that ltheir base will break and they will be out $11 plus a tube of Permatex?
Because the hour plus of my time scraping old permatex off to apply a new gasket costs more than the money spent?

@op the rutland is def the best. It’s not perfect but it’s the best. I wish someone would weave an effectively seamless rutland custom sized for each egg.
If you would simply use the ”paint and rust remover” I recommend and even send a picture thereof you chuck that into a quarter inch drill and that strips off even the worst old gasket and Permatex in mere minutes, without ANY damage to the ceramic edge!
Ron, could I get contact info? I’m looking to purchase one of your infamous gasket kits.
  • @RRP same here please. Would love one for an XL

Thanks for the info. Such a bummer to hear. Hope he's doing better and recovering. Any suggestions on an alternative gasket supplier?
