Some time ago, a friend here who shall remain nameless (to protect the virtuous) said he had some extra bourbon barrel chunks - and asked if I’d want some? I said sure.
Package came when I was out in Cali. I just opened it. Here’s what was inside:

Far too generous. Forum friends are the best.

As you know this friendly gift DID NOT come from me, but may I add a shortened "long story"?
Back here in Peoria, IL - it was known as the whiskey making CAPITAL of the world for YEARS! Bourdon barrels with their charred insides and their beautifully made (cooperage, I believe it is called) were practically a dime a dozen and often were not even sold, but left for people to take and burn for firewood!
Jump ahead to 1972...the price went CLEAR UP to $5 a barrel! I bought 2! BIG spender, huh?
Anyway somehow I managed to carry both to my unfinished basement. Why? I planned to make a poker table and who knows what else!
By say 1976 I had finished my basement - even without using either of those barrels which by that time I really regretted and hated! Besides there way no way to get them back up out of my finished basement! And I wasn't even a griller at that point!
When we sold that home in 1978 I managed to convince the buyer how great it was that I was leaving him those vintage bourbon barrels to make..."a poker table and who knows what else"...
