I had to do homework in both English units and metric units all through engineering school. A few years into working for a state DOT we attempted to go metric . This was at the urging of various material suppliers who wanted to produce one set of material sizes that could be sold world wide. We surveyed for future projects using metric units and developed plans for using metric units. In fact we did several projects using metric measurements and designations. The contractors had no problem, a tape measure is a tape measure, but all of the sudden those same suppliers wanted to continue selling their old standard English sized pipes and rebar rather than put some skin in the game. What finally killed it though was when we started putting up kilometer sign posts on the roads. The curmudgeons who ran the government, at that time democrats even in Mississippi, suddenly had a poop hemorrhage.  I will leave the real motivation to your imagination. Since we had spent millions out of an always struggling budget and had to spend more millions to replace brand new signs the DOT had no further interest in replying that game. Not that we were technically unable, as I said at least a generation of engineers was metric fluent. Many more examples possible from this time frame but this will do.

@dbCooper - thanks for that.  Impressive achievement, even to just get one flight. 

For me, we can definitely engineer our way to achieve all the scientific exploration and information we could extract from Mars without having to over-engineer the systems to get humans to the planet.  However, the human piece is the only theme that keeps the Mars deal on the front page.

There is no way gubmint funding to support the human side of the adventure should occur.  If private enterprise wants to roll out the hundreds of billions (likely a low ball number) then have at it.  Off mini soap-box.

And no inspector on the site. In 34 years you can rest assured that I never paid for such a thing or allowed it to remain. And this is out in the open where it couldn't have been missed by the most burned out unmotivated inspector. Probably Chinese bolts of less than specified strength.

You assume that the contractor can read. I can think of a few occasions in my career where that was not so.

Shouldn’t those bolts be scored for sheering?  Red Heads should be hardened minimally as you have to beat the f*ck out of them to get them in.

Not only that but it is next to a traffic lane. Rest area or truck scale maybe? Possibly a sign post in a concrete median definitely next to concrete pavement that was properly raked when it was poured. The striping needs redone when they find the funds.

A bit confused that it was so hard to find footage of this "incident" today; I'm also confused that everyone was cheering at the end, granted it sounded like Mission Success was defined as clearing the tower, and not much else.
