Why did the 2020/1 Tokyo Olympics lack traction?

We are not sport fans, but do watch the Olympics. We record everything and then watch what we want and skip over the rest. For example, we always skip over women's events (except indoor volleyball and gymnastics), running in circles, running for miles, bicycling for miles, junk events (you know what they are), and discussions (not interested in an athlete's feelings). The other day we went through a six hour recording in about an hour.
“Junk events”  “not interested in the athletes feelings” wow.

Too many professional athletes from most major countries. Olympics should be amateur athletes that are up and coming.

I also think that instead of wasting billions of dollars every 4 years in a host city, it should be wash rinse repeat in about 5 cities on a rotation. Complete waste of $$ building out stadiums and pools and all that other crap to get used for a month and then forgotten about
I disagree about the amateur thing. I want to see the best of the best regardless of pay status

We got the Peacock app just for the Olympics. The problem is they wait several days to post the final events.  It sucks because even if you wanted to watch live via tape delay on prime time, the winners are spoiled.

Amateur only Olympics would fail because you have to be sponsored by someone to fund the level of training to be serious.  If that's prohibited then it becomes stacked for rich countries

Or countries where they used their military as a cover for effectively professional athletes.

Well at least we finished on top of the medal counts.  I’ve always found that statistic kind of funny and somewhat at odds to the spirit of the games.

I agree.  In fact, allow any/all performance enhancing drugs!  I want to see how fast those guys can REALLY go!

I've been an Olympics junkie since 1968 - at 10 years old I recall crying when the Winter Olympics in Grenoble came to an end.  I dreamed of being a downhill skier like Jean-Claude Killy or Spider Sabich.  Loved the Summer games later that year in Mexico City - Bob Beamon, the "Fosbury Flop", George Foreman, and the protests of Smith and Carlos.  I was hooked for life.

Definitely, the 13-hour time difference was a huge impediment, and while there seemed to be ample viewing opportunities between NBC, NBC Sports, USA, and Peacock, it felt very disjointed/unconnected.  Far too often I knew the result before the viewing (mostly a "why bother?" situation).  And for the love of God, please, no more beach volleyball!  If ever there was a sport we didn't need, it's synchronized diving.  Good to see so much of Shi Tingmao, though...😂 (childish chuckle every time.

You should have used the NBCsports app which had pretty much every event live and available for immediate replay. The NBC website listed every event and broadcast schedule. Between six TV channels and NBCsports, you could see any event you wanted.
