Fire Pit Recommendation - OT

RyanStl Posts: 1,050
Hi all - I'm moving in a couple weeks and I love the stone fire pit I built at the current house a couple years ago.  At the new house I plan to completely redo the patio and build a circular off-shoot for a fire pit.  I've been looking at smokeless fire pits like the Solo Stove or Breeo.  Does anyone have any input on what is best?

I'm expecially concerned about longevity, as I'm not not going to be bringing the fire pit in and out to use; it'll remain on the patio (possibly with cover).  I also want to be able to use regular logs, so 24" and up and nothing that requires pellets.

I have and use my fire pit all the time as the way to safely burn the numerous fallen sticks from my heavily wooded lot. Also some occasional night time fires using logs. So just how does a fire pit become a smokeless one?

I have a Yukon solo and have had a good experience- plenty large enough for full sized firewood and big enough for our family of 5 to stay reasonably warm and make smores.

Cover is solid and no concerns leaving it out in the elements.  Not sure what’s going on with pictures- can’t edit them?

By re-introduction of air after primary combustion by way of upper vents.  Very cool to watch, once you have a hot enough fire.  Check out the Solo stove site for some good vids.
First became aware of this principle over 40 years ago when we put a Kent tile fire wood stove in our house.  Once the fire was established, a blue flame would roll up and down the glass in the door, completely away from the main fire.

We need to talk Breeo and Solo Yukon are the top two, but didn't know if anything else is out there.  How is the weathering steel on the Breeo?

There are some Chinese ripoffs on Amazon, but they are smaller. Also looking at Tiki.

I don't know anything about them.....just have a customer that wanted me to get him a few, so I signed up as a dealer.  Haven't ordered them yet though.

Also a dealer for Garmin products too!!

I purchased the Solo Stove Bonfire with the Backyard Bundle during their deeply discounted pre-Christmas sale($379 total) and have been extremely pleased. It’s easy to light and puts out great heat. Wife and I have used it 2-3 times per week on the patio. Very nice when egging in the cold weather. Only drawback is lack of handles since it is somewhat awkward to empty ashes. I have found some aftermarket handles on eBay that work pretty well when transporting it to the far reaches of my backyard for emptying. Overall, I highly recommend it.
L and MM BGEs with JJGeorge tables, Mini BGE with carrier, other charcoal and pellet smokers/grills too numerous to count.

I just use my backpack blower- aim towards natural area and let rip.  Easiest way I have found as the Yukon is a little unwieldy to try to shake.

Actually found handles on Etsy, not eBay: https://www.etsy.com/listing/931610313/handles-for-solo-stove-fire-pits-set-of?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_b-home_and_living-outdoor_and_garden-fire_pits-fire_pit_tools&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAiAkJKCBhAyEiwAKQBCkqZbxopCt_X-jjmUds06wlH1TMtYnVX4g45pmH05Uagf77aGPU1uNhoC8LMQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_1843970812_65111678370_346429594445_pla-305869652350_m__931610313_12768591&utm_custom2=1843970812&gclid=CjwKCAiAkJKCBhAyEiwAKQBCkqZbxopCt_X-jjmUds06wlH1TMtYnVX4g45pmH05Uagf77aGPU1uNhoC8LMQAvD_BwE

Yeah, I can get just about anything but the aviation stuff.
  • I have the Solo Stove Ranger size and really love the portability for trips and ease of dumping out the ash.  For a stationary setup would have gone with the large Breeo and that cool post for grilling or an S&S fire pit.

    Solo stove handle.

Handle from a 5gal bucket works too.

I'm in on the Breeo, but hope I don't regrett not having the type of open fire pit where I can burn a bunch of sh@t like scrap wood, junk mail, and such.  Luckily the new house house zero Sweet Gum trees.

Ordered and getting this with the lid.

All right, all right, all right.  Got my 24" Breeo with sear plate and lid.
I’ve really been wanting to get one of these. Do you recommend the sear plate?

It seems like it is something I’d like to have if I get one, but I’ve been wondering if it makes the interior of the fire pit too small.

Solo Stove must be listening.  I see they have a pre-order on their new handle.

This website is going to cost me more money than my ex-wife!  Between smokeless fire pits, front pocket wallets, BGE stuff, I need to get a second job!

Story on sear plate is I didn't want it because I have proper grills for steaks and such (own 2 BGE).  I didn't want a restriced hole up top either.

However, there was a price shift from showing intrest to ordering that made the sear plate add on the same as not adding it on.  The sear plate adds $120 to the cost according to the website.  I chose the sear plate because all was equal and felt like I got a better price overall or "deal" so to speak.

Yes, the hole up top  is smaller, but it doesn't change the actual inside diameter of the Breeo.  You can tuck your wood underneath.

One complaint I've read of smokless fire pits is all the heat goes straight up.  Not true with the Breeo.  I was warm better or same as my old regular fire pit that was wider but lower.  I think the extra mass with the sear plate also helps with radient heat.

Way to flex that Rolex!  Handle is pretty cool idea.

I'm surprised it's taken them this long. They must have BGE marketing and design alumni on their payroll :)

That is a nice looking handle, though.

Ha! That definitely isn’t a Rollie. It’s a way cheaper Citizen, from woot or some other discount site.

True!  Although, if that were the case, they would have to wait for CGS to design a solo-stove handle before they came out with their own version.
