Buy a $300 3D printer and print that $3 part. Duh.Botch said:What to do, what to do...
The "power coupler" portion of my Kitchenaid blender that self-destructed last week, is no longer manufactured. On eBay I can buy the entire base unit for $30, but it was pretty beat up (mine is 20-25 years old but pristine (except for the coupler)). I could buy an entire refurbished unit for $60, but I shy away from "refurbished" based on past experiences. I could design the part in AutoCAD and have this place in SLC make me a new one, but that will cost more than a new blender (plus I no longer have a specimen to reverse-engineer). I could buy a new blender for $OMG. I could go without a blender (I didn't use it that much) and get by with a combination of chef's knife, food processor and molcajete...

@Botch I've found that for many things "discontinued" does not mean unavailable. Here's a possible starting point for you...

@dbCooper, when we eventually meet, I owe you a beer! Curious why those didn't show up on eBay...

Yeah, I get that; I had a few EweTube reviews lined up, excited to buy a new Breville blender which could heat up the blended ingredients for soup, and even had a battery-powered "suction cap" which pulled the air out of the blender, for "quicker blending and brighter vibrant colors" (pulling out the oxygen). @dbCooper's solution was a much more conservative (and wife-friendly, even though I don't have one) solution.
Plus, I can maintain my matching, White Kitchenaid lineup, blender, food processor and mixer, against the kitchen wall (the full extent of my home decor expertise).“I'll have what she's having."

Hopefully, they do not send the BATF to raid you for printing custom parts to repair items you own. If this was John Deere you would be in federal lock-up just for searching ewetube.Botch said:Eoin said:

I had a Breville for a few years, first spendy blender I bought. I really liked it for the 3 years or so it lasted. Pain in the ass to clean too.

My dad had a white oak tree cut down in the backyard and brought to the mill about 30 years ago. It's been stored in my grandparents barn loft ever since. My grandparents farm is going on the market. We grabbed a few pieces from the barn on Monday.nolaegghead said:Bunch of dull blades and about to start some new projects so bought this pile of "manly" stuff.

He has another 15 plus 17' boards of white oak in the loft yet. I told him I'd go half on a DeWalt planer with him. My thought anyway...."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

If you need a home for the lumber, let me know...don't let it go with the barn! (I have a buddy near you with some barns)WeberWho said:

Thanks Nola. I think he's going to stack and tarp it for the short term and try to come up with a plan for it. I'd love to take some off his hands for new kitchen cabinet doors down the road. Someway to incorporate into my house as it's from the property where I grew up. My brother-in-law is a woods teacher by trade. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle to bring back to Milwaukee with him.nolaegghead said:

We planed some down to see what we were working with.
I think it's worth the time and effort. It should end up being some really nice wood for something. I've looked/watched/read about planers in the past. More of a want than need. Now it might actually make sense to pick one up or get a little more serious. I'd really like to pick up a DeWalt 735 but pretty rare to find one 2nd hand. We might have to go new as they don't come up very often on Craigslist/Marketplace.

I have a Dewalt 734 for rough wood and a 735 for finish work. They are worth the investment if you plan on doing some finish cabinetry or furniture with solid wood. Actually, you can make some nice shelves and stuff from fir and pine....night and day if you plane it vs factory finish. If you aren't sure, try to find a used one. Or borrow one (but buy blades for the guy). Was thinking about buying the helical blades for the 735. Expensive but fast and quiet. And they last a long time. Knives do not last long.______________________________________________I love lamp..

I have a 735 and sprung for the helical head after a couple years. Pro - I don’t have to buy the dewalt disposable blades anymore. Con- still leaves tracks at times and requires taking lighter cuts in my opinion. I finish hand plane for most things so I’m really using it for dimensioning close to size. My brother has the same thing and mostly complains about having to sand after planing which I would expect to do to some level anyways. If I had to do over, I would have bought a 15” grizzly with a helical head. I went the dewalt route due to cost as I couldn’t justify the money on the grizzly at the time and I could upgrade the dewalt to helical as it made sense. Cliff notes - if you have the floor space, in my opinion, if you want a helical head planer, buy a 15” planer with a helical and skip the dewalt upgrade in my opinion unless the helical heads for the dewalt have come down significantly.nolaegghead said:I have a Dewalt 734 for rough wood and a 735 for finish work. I don't mind sanding. I have the festool RO 150 and it's a pleasure to sand with it. Plenty of power, almost no dust. The big problem with the consumer grade planers is the knives aren't made to sharpen and they are vastly underpowered. Also the feed system is susceptible to snipe (folding in/out feed tables - seriously?)
