Got the email today, she tested Positive on Tuesday (South Dakota).  Fortunately she only had the high fever/night chills for a couple days, and hasn't lost her sense of taste/smell.  She's more angry that her husband and son are quarantined, and losing a couple weeks of work.  WTF.

I want to convince her to get the vaccine now, anyway, but know I won't win that battle.

    What does one do?

Well, I got another email; she felt bad again Friday morning and basically slept until Monday, went to Acute Care and they pumped a liter of saline into her, badly dehydrated.  Been sleeping since, mostly.  BIL did get his first vac., but missed his second shot Friday and is rescheduled for next Monday.

Major societal issues in that many people:

    1. Do not believe expertise
    2. Lack the ability to empathize

Subsequently they unwittingly do things against their best interests and are surprised/angry when their individual/collective actions/lack of mitigation play out.

One of my sisters employees got vaccinated at Walmart. She received a bill for $180.00. My sister thinks that her employee got the J&J. I know that vaccine costs $10 a dose and that the government paid for it in advance. She showed my sister the bill so it wasn’t some sort of scam.

That doesn't make sense.  From Walmart's FAQ:

Is there a cost to the vaccine? If so, what is the price?
The federal government is providing the vaccine at no cost. Walmart’s fee to administer the vaccine will be billed to private insurance or the federal government.

Pretty much what I told my sister tonight but her employee showed her the actual bill. Her employee had medical insurance. Maybe there is a deductible but $170 more than the actual vaccine costs? I received no charge for two shots of Moderna at the state run drive through clinic.

Under the CARES Act, non-grandfathered individual and employer-sponsored plans are required to cover COVID-19 vaccines, including any charges for administration of the vaccine, without cost-sharing

My sister doesn’t provide health insurance though she does provide a 401k. That is actually pretty generous as most of the dozen or so employees are part time, mornings or evenings or plug and play. The only 2 full time are her and her daughter. Due to certifications that each of them have one of the two of them must be at the school from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. The employees either have insurance through their husbands employers or private insurance.

That sounds generous for part timers.  I would urge her and her employee to call walmart and her insurance company.  She shouldn't have to pay anything, and I've never heard of anyone paying for it.

So .0004% of vaccinated people died. It takes two weeks for a vaccine to become effective. How many of these 3 were infected after 2 weeks post vaccination?

theres different ways to look at it, we are entering no masks required, loosening the rules, adding in new variants etc. only time will tell how this picks up speed. im just imagining that the un reported cases are much higher than this indicates. how recent were the 700,000 vaccinated people actually vaccinated, how many of those catch it in the next several months. it wasnt long ago that there were only 3 people that died from covid, what,  maybe 14 months ago

Our county just opened no appointment first come/ first served drive thru vaccinations for 18 year olds and above. Started today and will be happening tomorrow and Sunday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Told my son to go online and print and fill out their Vaccine Screening and Consent Form before he even tries to get into line tomorrow. Otherwise he will be routed to a field parking lot to fill out the form to get back in line to go to the next stop for his vaccination. Probably going to be a real cluster.

Yeah, Osterholm actually covered this a couple of podcasts ago, when the issues with the AstraZeneca vaccine popped up.  He observed that during normal times, when there’s no pandemic and no vaccination program, a healthy number of people are simply getting blood clots due to a whole host of issues.  In other words, they aren’t necessarily even being triggered by the vaccines.

I think there may have been some indication with the J&J that the rate was slightly higher (like a few percentage points) than the background, I’m not sure.  Anyway, I think the CDC really kind of bungled this one.  It’s too bad, because vaccine hesitancy is a real problem for us.

Lately the big story is that a guy had a stroke after the J&J. The state health department said basically that there was no connection.

CDC/FDA’s fault for not naming the vaccines to give their leader credits.

I guess the three shot and killed in Austin on Sunday don't rise up to the "mass" part.
