I’ve been using Fogo super premium lump for a while with good success but today I reverse seared some filets on one egg and roasted Brussels sprouts on another and both had a very strong chemical taste like lighter fluid. Anyone experiencing issues with a recent batch of Fogo? Very odd!

I use the Fogo yellow bag when I cant get Rockwood but never had that issue. Now Cowboy is another story

So weird my clothing even has the chemical smell. Must just be a bad bag.

The South American stuff has a very odd smell while burning. I don’t find it pleasant. That said, I have not noticed it affecting the taste of my food negatively. I avoid it because of that. I just don’t enjoy being out around the egg when using it. It’s a weird odor. It’s just the wood I think.

I have not had that issue with fogo but i had the exact thing happen with a bag of the KJ big block. I have used hundreds of pounds of both and just that once. I couldnt use the bag i got it was so bad.

Thanks hopefully this was just one bad bag.

I’ve only tried one bag of fogo and it definitely had that smell after lighting. One of my cooks on it gave a little bit of that astringent smoke flavor to the chicken I was cooking. That was my last bag of Fogo. I’ll take RW, RO, B&B anyday over that.

Resurrecting this old post.
Woke up to an email from Fogo telling me I should upgrade my egg using a Rutland gasket.email said:It can be argued that there are not many ways to improve the Big Green Egg. The one area that we have found that it is possible is with the gaskets. There is a replacement gasket out there called the Rutland Gasket. It is a fiberglass “rope” gasket that only attaches to the base of the Egg and doesn’t require one on the dome. We were able to locate the gasket, precut to size and great instructions provided with it from a gentleman named Ron Pratt.
Take a look at today's video, we will take you through everything you need to know step by step!
Great Mention, @RRP!

That's funny- they posted that video on the bge subreddit today too. They are pushing those rutland gaskets!

I have good results with FOGO Premium in the black bag. I also have goos results with Blueshog. I have 2 bags of BGE unopened, oak/hickory and maple. Want to try the BGE before I buy Rockwood, Don't need 4 open bags. Cowboy sux on so many levels, lighting, taste smell ....LG BGE, Weber Genesis gas, Weber 22" Kettle, Weber Smokey Joe

a week or so ago, caliqueen forced me to clean the garage a bit. She sort of unearthed part of my charcoal stash - 200lbs+ of Fogo Premium. Purchased several years ago, when it was <$1/lb on Amazon.

Remember the guy who came on for like 5 minutes, had an egg for like a week, said he had met Meathead online or something like that and kept correcting everyone with links to amazing ribs articles? I still laugh about that guy. He was mad.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX
