OT - Texas in 2020 in a nutshell

https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/how-to-get-your-taco-fix-safely-during-pandemic/

So much to love about this:
  • Texas Monthly, a statewide magazine, but really "Dallasy" (and around here, that's not a compliment), now has a Taco editor, complementing the awesome BBQ coverage they supply (@BBQSnob is the guy in the Tootsie Chef's Table that gave them the review that blew things up for them)
  • The taco editor (@TacoTrail) is also a busy beaver, and has also written a great book on the topic (https://www.amazon.com/American-Tacos-Jos%C3%A9-R-Ralat/dp/1477316523).  It turns out that Austin isn't the origin of tacos, breakfast or otherwise
  • While @TacoTrail does his reviews, if the shop isn't enforcing a mask policy, he bounces.  Given the impact a positive review can have on peoples' business, his approach may single handedly do more to promote mask wearing (at least among the tacoscienti) than anything anyone else has done
BTW, VOTE!

  • The fact that we're still having these discussions is maddening. Albeit, taco talk does ease the suffering a bit.

Here in fly over country I am a Texas Monthly subscriber to the print and email feeds.  Thanks for the push to get right on the taco story.  Better to be lucky than good any day!

Minnesota is becoming Mini-Texas. I can hardly go a day without seeing a Texas license plate on the road here. I see more Texas plates than I do Wisconsin plates and I'm 30 minutes from Sconie.

Back when I was on the faculty at UT, and more academically minded, I would organize an Annual Taco Truck Crawl for the graduating Fellows. We hit over half of the places on that list (the grungier ones), missed about 25% of that list, and had not heard of about 25% of the rest.

Which means... I have work to do.
And thus a plan was hatched. Hit me up

It could be arranged. Especially since the weather is cooling down now. Plus, it would be "COVID friendly", being open-air, and all that.

Oy. That's a tough one. What do you call it when you fail into one, then end up teaching at a different one?

Out of curiosity, was the final stretch of the crawl towards the nearest toilet?   Seems like the logical conclusion.

Nyope. That's how amateurs end up. I'm a professional taco truck crawler, and diarrhea dodger.

That's "Mobile Canteen" as I was notified by the driver when I jokingly made a comment one day at work, while standing in line.  Driver didn't show up at the complex where I worked for two weeks.

Things must have changed. They’re pretty clean these days. Even the ones I’ve swung by at construction sites.

From a cleanliness standpoint, I’d rather eat at any number of taco trucks, than some of the chain places.
