OT - Jaws

Watched the classic movie Jaws again last night. The parallels between the current pandemic and the story are unreal. Worth watching in the current context.

Could not believe how different the movie was from book. But love both.

I’ll just say that there’s public safety and a booming tourist economy at odds with one another. A mayor and a handful of scientists. As I say, worth watching with a new lens.

We need a bigger boat!   Does relate to today also.  Remember seeing this as a kid and still remember it to this day.  Interesting that all the new CGI movies I forget them after a few years.

Thanks Frank. I must say that my participation has been pitiful as of late. Always nice to check in with friends. Hope that all’s well on your end. Send me some news on the other side if ever you get the chance.

That movie was so frightening for 1 reason only. You barely ever saw the shark. It was the fear of the unknown that sticks with people to this day. I still won’t go in the ocean more than knee deep unless I was in water like the Caribbean where you can see 100 yards in any direction.

In 1975, I was a junior in HS. One of my electives was Oceanography. Our teacher took the class to see Jaws as a field trip. Made perfect sense to us.

Yep.  My understanding is that this wasn’t the original plan for the movie, but they had constant problems with the mechanical shark, and so Spielberg was forced to do a lot without showing the shark.

The opening scene with the woman swimming to the buoy at night is still hard to watch.

Jaws was the first movie that I went to the theater by myself to watch. I was 11 years old. I don't recall what the name of the movie was that I was supposed to be watching.
To this day, I still have a real fear of the ocean, Knee deep is plenty deep for me.
  • Really, the music is a large part of the reason the movie is so compelling. John Williams is an absolute master of suspense.

But I assume you’ll pull onto a freeway without shaking in fear.. I’ve been surfing for over 30 years and scariest thing I’ve seen is the occasional dolphin that spooks me or the huge manta ray that swam under me while surfing in Cabo. I will admit that I was a little afraid of crocodiles in Costa Rica though.

I’m way more afraid of humans than wildlife.

I remember the barracuda that I saw 3 feet from my hand once while fishing. It was just chilling in my 19 foot boats shadow. Or how we hooked a hammerhead where I had gone swimming the previous time. Both less than 10 miles from shore in the Gulf.

I have had barracuda bump me in the back of the head while diving.

Seemed like a great movie to take the whole family to while we were at the beach back then. 23 years later my bride and I were crossing the plains, and spent the night in Kansas. We went out to see Twister. There was a tornado in the state that night.

Trouble is, not being from there, when they said, "There's a twister in whatever county", we didn't know where that, or we, were!
