I loved the boss from Parks & Rec, @TEXASBGE2018. You think it's too funny to be true - but it isn't. I work in state gov't and a quarter of my coworkers are self described Libertarians. They are keeping an eye on things from the inside.

Let me relate a couple experiences, and then ask a question.

One sunny day, I'm in my back yard, checking the condition of wifeys wash on the line (I just help once in a while!). Out front in the cul de sac, a police cruiser pulls up and two local PO's get out. Odd, but whatever. I turn to go back in the house and they start calling to me to come over and talk to them. Soon it's "Who are you? Do you have ID?", etc. Not in the mood for a constitutional argument, and unarmed, I show 'em my papers. They go on to explain that they have a report of a burglar afoot, and seen nearby. I just thought it was a case of Husband Handling Laundry that had them upset.

Darling Daughter (DD), is not one of those adoption success stories you see in the movies. She's more of a petty crook, drug addict, and child abandoner type. You can assume for this story that we are not that way. At 18, she was invited to 'shape up or ship out', choosing to ship. One night near midnight a year or so after her departure, the phone rings and its local PD, looking for Joe Sixpack. Hmmm, does this have to do with DD? Why yes it does! Sixpack is a wanted felon who loaned his car to her (which she got pulled over in) and our address is on her license, so... We inform them that neither he nor she resides here, and the polite officer thanks us and assures us that they've "never had any trouble in that part of town".

As far as I know, our local PD has never had issues like those in the news, and we've had lots of polite interactions with them (lots. courtesy DD). Can you say you wouldn't view these incidents, had they happened in your life, a little differently now? Can you see the headlines: "Suspect attempted to evade police", "Police were searching for wanted felon". She-ite man, it makes you think.

In the UK we are not required to carry ID and are not required to answer the police with personal information without due cause. A slightly different ball game here with police interactions, as most police are unarmed, so getting shot is extremely unlikely.  I've always found being polite to the police is a good policy, but would object to being asked for ID. Living in a city centre and not being white statistically and anecdotally results in a much higher frequency of unwanted police interactions.
