This looks a lot like your smoker with a larger stack added and dropped closer to grate level. Since going taller might create a stall in the stack, the larger diameter dropped lower could be your win.
Since you have the welding skills this might work for you. You see lots of smoke leaking out, it’s intentional as he is smoking cheese right now.

Double-wall the stack if you get a stall because it's long enough to cool the air.

You got me motivated to clean mine up and run her again. Had it wrapped because of house repairs but we got bumped another month.
Just getting a coal bed established right now. Did pick up couple oven gauges.
Mine already has a diffuser plate about 6” welded on above fire box opening.
I have diffuser in at about 1”-1 1/4” of main plate.

Have the diffuser plate with about 2” gap now. Have the 2 oven gauges about the width of a nice brisket.
Running on just bed of coals, temps are fairly even and close to center exterior gauge of 275. I spread out the oven gauges more. I’m just letting the temp slowly drop to see where the temps go.
Will grab some biscuits tomorrow so I can check lower heat vs upper heat and feed the wife. Also a bread lover.lol
