Keep in mind, you'll need to pair it with a wireless router. I use a Netgear Nighthawk

    Thanks @ColtsFan

I do need to get a wireless router as well.  Need to span three levels including basement, so was looking at a mesh system with at least three nodes.  Any suggestions ?

  • Check out Google Home WiFI. It's a decent little mesh system and it's also a router, so you'd just need the SB8200 and it. Depending on the square footage of each level, you may be able to get by with 3, 1 on each level.

Recently helped a friend install 6 on a 5k square foot home.

Only thing I don't like is that it's all configured through the Google App on your phone. As someone used to enterprise environments, I didn't care for it, but it's fine for the home.

    I have a Netgear CM1000, does DOCSIS 3.1 gigabit

I used it a few months, then got gigabit fiber when I switched to ATT.

I paid $174 last year, I'll ship it to you for half price.

check Costco. I got the Google mesh WiFi a year or so back, and they had a deal where you got 4 units for the price of 3.

The  Netgear Orbi mesh system is supposedly more robust, and Costco carries that too.

I am a fan of the AmpliFi products. https://amplifi.com/   I have the AmpliFi-HD lineup and am really happy with it.  Base unit and three antennas.  Perfect coverage over the three floors and out to the patio.

I've gone full ubiquiti in my house and I love it.

  • I bought google mesh to replace my own homegrown mesh, it did not deliver for me. Took it back to Costco and got Orbi. It works well on my 1Gbps fiber connection. Wireless speed tests from when I was installing and testing around the house:

I also made sure the mesh backhaul connection is a wired gig interface, not wireless.

I'm going to agree with @ColtsFan on the modem and say get the ARRIS Surfboard 8200. I'll differ in my recommendation for a wifi access point and say go with the Unifi:

UniFi is the way to go in my opinion. Tried ASUS, Netgear, etc. and when we installed UniFi equipment we now have a very stable and fast network.

I have the nighthawk as well. It’s on my top floor and works all the way down to my pool (which is down 3 levels). I can do anything down there that I can do right next to the router. It may work for you without a mesh system

Wifi and modem are totally different jobs, folks.  Question was about a modem, which is the node that communicates with the interwebz, wifi is intranet communications.

  • @nolaegghead I bet you wouldn’t be righting the ship if you were selling Wifi. You just trying to help unload that modem of yours ;)

I bought this one for my comcast line, works great, although the internet is free with my tv and my router rarely fails over to it:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06Y4TG6KN/

it does gig if I ever moved off the cheap tier I’m on. I paid $80 for it two years ago.

I actually do need it all.  Comcast is just flipping the switch, I need all the hardware - modem, router, wifi, however they come bundled or not bundled.

thanks for all of the recommendations

@nolaegghead I‘ll PM you if I decide to take you up on your offer, very kind of you.

  • I have the google wifi and it works well. I have to span 3 stories as well. I previously has a netgear nighthawk and it had very slow spots on some floors. I adjusted antennas many times but the mesh fixed it all.

For the modem, the first response is a good recommendation.
