When folded like in the picture, you can use it as a carrying handle or turn it 90 degrees to hang it over something like a shelf or car seat (a 180 degree turn allows you to remove it.)

But the real purpose of the hook is when the buttstock is extended.  You turn it 90 degree toward your body, and it hooks under your forearm for support.  The idea is that you can shoot it one handed like if you had to go around a corner or hand out of the side of the car with it.

It also has the ability to fire in semi-auto or pump action.  So if the police were shooting non-lethals that didn't have enough power to cycle the action, you would have the forearm in the detent for manual.  Push the button underneath and slide the forearm about an inch forward and it locks in the semi-auto (then you use the charging handle on the side and/or the bolt drop on the other side.)  There's also a button on the side to shut off the magazine so you can manually load rounds which I haven't quite figured out yet.  Pretty crazy gun.  Soon as it warms up I'll play with it more.

There's a way you can put a screw in to permanently turn the safety to Off for more rapid fire.  Basically put it in the Off position and put a screw in to hold it there.

Yes, that works!

The new 3.0's have a crossbolt safety which doesn't reset everytime you cycle it.  They also have a larger salt hopper which is nice.

Pay the tax at purchase (so glad we don't have sales tax here) but then you might be able to write it off on your fed/state income taxes. Depending on what you got, maybe depreciate it over a few years. Play the game to your advantage.

I rent currently, so I can't hope to do that. Next place will be a house of my own. Which opens up some other possibilities.

I'd like to see a double-barreled version. A little wider spread pattern would be useful.  I'd also take more power, but I have the first generation. I don't always blow the little buggers to smithereens so much as knock them unconscious.  My understanding is that the newer ones have a bit more bang.

Try the Lawn & Garden 2.0 (yellow / green) one.  That ones shoots nearly twice as much salt.  Some people put kosher salt in them--try that too!!

I'm a bit surprised that there is an "advanced" version of an air gun that kills flies.  
I'm fortunately living in an area where flies are rare; if one does appear I use advanced rubber-band skills honed in junior high school.

@JohnInCarolina a wider spread pattern is only necessary if a person is not that good of a shot.   As a young person I hunted successfully with a 20 gauge while my friends used 12 gauge. I didn't, and still don't, need the extra lead and powder from a 12 gauge.  <Insert winkie emoji here>.

Good for you, but I hunted squirrel with a compound bow as a kid.  Get back to me after shooting one of those little buggers off a tree limb from 30 yards away with a friggin arrow man.  I see your 20 gauge and I laugh!

I shot a raccoon clean out of a tree in our back yard, made quite a bit more difficult by the fact that it was an Eastern hemlock.  Holy mother of God the way that thing started screaming you'd think I'd hit him right in the nutsack.
