I like the way you think!

Has anyone here actually tried using the OP's can opener flat, and on the left side?  I'm curious as to whether it works.  I personally use an (Oxo?) can opener that cuts the outside of the rim, with the benefits mentioned above (its only fault is that they wear out after about ten years, but I can swing that).

I keep a "traditional" can opener in my drawer, for one thing: 4-oz tomato paste cans.  I open the top, flip the can, and then open the bottom.  I press on one lid lightly, until the other lid is just proud of the sides of the can, swipe it sideways (scraping off the paste) and discard that lid, then use the other lid to continue pushing the paste out into the pot.  This is much quicker than scraping the paste out with a utensil, and misses almost nothing.
Don't judge, my Daddy (who grew up during the Depression) taught me how to squeeze the final bit of toothpaste out with a bench vice, how to wet one side of the last bit of soap to "glue" it onto the new soap bar, and how to save toothpaste caps in a shoebox to use as replacement caps for a car battery (not a good idea).
