Buy once, cry once.  You can tow your Ram behind.  Find one used and go for it!

  • As you plan to stay in one place for a time, slide toppers are a must. It is important to keep the top of the slide rooms clean and clear of debris. When you pull them in, stuff does stick and now it is inside the coach. You need a ladder that will store in the rig and a good leaf blower to clear out under the toppers.
Also, check out the unit when the slides are in, can you still get to the fridge, bathroom, etc. It is a **** if you stop to pick up some groceries and you can’t get them into the fridge.
many units have outdoor kitchens, never met anyone who really uses/likes them.
In BC you have to hold a specific license if the unit is over 10,500# GVWR. Good idea to check your local regs.
Have fun and now is a good time to buy, lots of 2018/19s on the lots.

This is good advice, I watched my buddy tweak his slide out. I could here it building pressure and one side had stopped, he had left the refer door open to air it out and the slide out caught on it, kinda a crappy design

  • As far as I know you are not required to have a special license unless you are over 26,000lbs.

26000 for a vehicle, 10,000 for a trailer, dont register it to a business or you may need a med card if the vehicle is over 10,000.  my 1 ton welding trucks are titled for 11,000 which makes it a pain with dot

a regular class d license is good for 10,000 pound trailer,  i think trailers used with farms can be bigger.  commercial trucks can be driven with a regular drivers license but over 10k and you need a med card and dot sticker and a commercial inspection. not sure how this applies in all states, but its a pain here

We have thought about this scenario for a while, as we plan for retirement.

We have come to the conclusion to be within the geographic region, living within a days drive of the things we love most, weather, wildlife, mountains, beaches, wine country, etc., made more sense.

We could do this now, but we both wish to wait for our children to get out of college.

We are going to the NW, as is our plans this week, maybe next week it will be different.

We will see where we end up, but I am sure hoping we will have you all come visit wherever we may end up.

The only way I’m leaving our house now is in a body bag.
  •  Well after much deliberation we are going to look in the direction of the Northwood Arctic Fox line of campers. From what I can see they look like possibly a higher quality camper, I like that they are 4 season, when researching I never thought about that but it is a thing, heated fresh water, insulated walls etc. there is a dealer 110 miles from here so on a weekend we will run down there and hopefully be inspired.
Everyone here has been a great help and offered very helpful insight thank you!

  • Only fox I’ve looked through was the 29-5t, it was loaded. I like the rear entry, centre kitchen bath, keeps the tanks over the axles.

@YukonRon where you looking at in the PNW?

My my suggestion is to get a larger 5er than you think you need. We fulltimed for 10 years in a Montana Big Sky that we paid 72k for in 2008. It is 40’ long with 4 slides.

We are looking at several locations; Southern Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, as well as Colorado, Wyoming, Northwestern Nevada.

My Beautiful Wife is still adamant about France, as am I. Southern and eastern France is where we are interested in being.
    Chamonix area to be specific....

We have had 3 fifth wheels and Jayco especially the Pinnacle series was by far the best but even the eagle series was much more reliable and better workmanship than the Montana we had.  We not have a 35K Bounder Motorhome and find that it works for us better as we get older but not as nice as the fifth wheels for being camped in or living in for long time.   Also, the fifth wheels pulled much better on the road and were not as affected by wind. One thing I would recommend is not getting a dually truck to pull with unless you have to because it is less turning radius an hard to use when at location and eating out or site seeing.

The upkeep cost on motorhomes is much more than on fifth wheel or trailers

Also, be sure you have a good place to get repairs/warranty work done nearby.   some sellers will only work on camper brands they sell.

  •  Thanks for the advice! It seems like you either pull a car or pull a trailer and the trailer option as you said should be cheaper.   My truck is a srw and it’s replacement will be too, Ive pulled ridiculous loads with it but mostly it is not hauling so no need to burn the extra rubber.   We will checkout the jayco pinnacle as well!
