Ot- Nicotine withdraws- Ot

I have been nicotine dependent since the age of 12 or so. I could go to the A&P to buy cigs and they just assumed it was for Mom.  In any case when I hired on at the railroad there were long stretches of nothing to do.  So smoking Marlboro's 2 -3 packs a 16 hour shift was the norm.   I started waking up with a really tight chest (go figure) and decided the cowboy killers had to go. Eureka there was smokeless tobacco. Not a good choice as the nicotine content was WAY more than just a smoke. Fast forward to now....A 58 year old man that wants to enjoy travel and grandkids more than tobacco...Hell I may save enough money to be a judge at wing ding 3!  Day 4 and not a happy camper!

Good on you, I haven’t been able to kick my Copenhagen habit yet.  There are some great products out there to curb the habit cravings both with and without nicotine.  Smokey mountain makes an herbal dip, there are grinds coffee pouches.  These would at least satisfy the ritual part you’re missing out on while you withdraw nicotine.

I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 30 years and quit cold turkey on January 2 2000 and I haven’t smoked one since that day. If you want to quit you can do it.

Also, if you go to a party and get drunk and have a dip, do not take the can home.  leave it at the party.

Good luck with your quit.  I started dipping st 16 and decided to quit 18 months ago.  Hardest freakin thing I’ve ever done.  The monster will try the livin **** out of your willpower.
Forget the patches or anything else that is still putting nicotine into your system.  It’s just fooling you and prolonging the exit of nicotine from your system.   I tried the patches.
I went cold turkey with the aid of Smokey Mountain dip.  It’s a total herbal non nicotine dip that is very close to my old habit of Grizzly.
Life sucked for me and even more for my wife.  I was a **** for a good 9months or so.  Glad she was stronger than myself.
Enough about me just be prepared for the worst and if you need to talk to somebody that’s been there hit me up.

    Ozzie had some great ideas!

I knew that by age 40 I HAD to quit. And I was determined that I had to because I WANTED TO! Being shamed into quitting, or "told to" by a spouse will NOT work! I actually found hypnosis even in a group setting of at least 30 people did not bother me and that first session WORKED!

That was now 34 years ago going from a 3 pack a day guy for 21 years to cold turkey (except for hypnosis) worked for me!

As I said I WANTED to quit - THAT weights far more that being asked to quit!

Decide to do it for YOURSELF!

Things that work for one person may not work for another, don't get discouraged if something doesn't work for you.  Try something else.

Here is what worked for me:

I quit smoking (2 packs a day) Jan 2 2003.  I knew I wanted to quit, I had kinda quit twice before but a ~2 yo daughter and a $500 bet were pretty good motivators.

    What worked for me-
I ate about 20# of sunflower seeds to keep my mind off it, when I burned out on that I ate a tub of Costco Licorice..  I went through both of those in week 1.  I haven't had either since.

I also didn't shy away from the smoking habit, to this day I like to hang out in the smoking area with a smoker.  If at a bar I will go outside while someone else smokes- I miss the fellowship but won't ever smoke again.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

My Beautiful Wife celebrated her 20th anniversary this year of quitting smoking.

She has gone through many difficult tasks in her life, but quitting smoking was, by far, the most difficult thing she has ever done.

We have lost a few friends to tobacco in the last few years. I applaud your decision, and am hoping you stick with it.

Best of luck my friend, we are pulling for you.

Stick with it! You will either quit when it makes sick or before it does. Forty years of sucking stinky butts put me in hospital for all of February cause I could not breathe (emphysemia, COPD and fluid on my lungs). Had to quit cause they didn't have a smokers room or lounge. HaHa No withdrawel symptoms as I had other things too worry about. A month later they repaired a leaky mitral valve with 3 'clips'. I am feeling so much better.

    Hang in there.

I went cold turkey in 1982. No patches or other medications.

    What helped:

I didn't say to myself, "I'll quit as soon as I finish this pack (or carton)". A few of my friends used that excuse. It didn't work.

Just quit. Right now. Throw everything away that has anything to do with smoking. Cigs, cigars, lighters, ashtrays, etc. In the trash NOW.

It was rough for a while since almost everyone else in the office smoked. I kept telling myself "this office stinks. Smoke stinks. People who smoke stink." It helped.

On a side note, after about two weeks I realized that I was no longer needing Rolaids!

Since I quit in back in 1978 the only advice I can offer is that was the best decision I have ever made.

You got this, man. I was a smoker in my teens and then switched to Copenhagen. I chewed 3/4 can per day for 12 years.

By far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life was quiting snuff. Missing that dip in my lip was probably the hardest. I used shredded jerky and the ground mint snuff.

It's hard, but you can power through this! It gets better. I've been tobacco free for a few years now and I couldn't be happier
