Thanks @nolaegghead on your engineer friends wagon.

Pm me details.   I have a service tech buddy with two wagons he's looking to sell so I might have more than I can handle!   May the best wagon win!

Fyi vacuum issues are common on those cars because they have so many plastic lines that cram with age and vacuum controls brake booster, door locks, engine fuel shutoff, and so many other things its crazy.   When it works, vac system is flawless.
    Will do.

I had a 300D and had to repair some leaks.  Toughest repair was the power steering.  A rebuilt unit was about $800.  The rebuild kit was $24.  So I rebuilt it.  Nightmare, there were about 300 tiny parts.   But I did it, and it worked.  Until I wrecked it.

well....I know for a fact he didn't vote for Hillary...
Let's not discuss the vote I threw away. I assumed (obviously incorrectly) that tRump didn't have a chance.

I know people voted for Brexit because they wanted to vote against the establishment and never thought it would get the majority. Hey ho.

I am not one to subscribe to the current, stereo-type buy but I am still rolling German steel, all manual (like my BGE's) transmissions (and all second -hand) 29+ years with a 1970 911 Targa (305 K on the clock-engine fire death sentence) and still in the stable a 2001 second hand BMW- 540 Sport pack with 185K.  FWIW-

540 with the V8 (I assume) is a lovely car, quiet and smooth but fast when you need it.

Well, others have beat me to it but the Remington 870 Wingmaster that I received as a gift from my Dad when I was around 12 yrs old. It's been with me for just about 40 years now and I've never had a single problem with it. Some day, my son will get that and probably every other gun I own.

If the wreck was a serious one, I bet you were grateful to be in a car designed to take a hit.

I've been Tboned in 300SD and hit in another 300 sd...126 and 116 chassis cars.  Both times the cars that hit me were destroyed and I drove mine away....and I had minor injuries in one crash and no injuries in the other

Wasn't very bad, no one was hurt at all, but it didn't take much damage to total that car.  It's a heavy car and I must say the front crumple zone worked perfectly.

it does not take much to total a vehicle nowadays, the rover was just shy of a few grand and it was just plastic snapon parts and two scuffed rims

The internet killed the profit margin for car dealers and manufacturers so they make it up on parts.

I try to buy the best smart phone available and lo and behold, the damn things only last about 2, maybe three years.  DAMN YOU, MOORE'S LAW!!
Twasn't physics that kllled my first cellphone, but Infrastructure!
Last summer I got a letter from the Tracfone folks, saying I had to upgrade my 2007 flip-phone, because no one was supporting the 2G networks anymore.  I bought an LG smartphone ($60), was glad to have the extra features/ intranetz/maps/etc, it interfaces nicely with my new Audi, and I kept all my accumulated minutes.
Ask yourselves, just because the computing power doubled since your last phone, does it offer anything useful that you didn't have before?

Wouldn't the intranetz do the same for parts?

There’s a lot less cost exposure on parts.

And besides the parts-there are the tools, skill-set factory training and repair manual access.  About the only one here who can get it done with great success is @nolaegghead.  I do think he is quite skilled at any mechanical workings as once you get into the diagnostics and soft-ware issues there are too many proprietary issues in the game.

  • I bought two things yesterday.  One will last and one will not.  The one that will last is the used Smith & Wesson model 63.  It’s an eight round cylinder chambered in .22 lr.  I plan on teaching my girls how to shoot with it. The one that won’t last is my iPhone 6 that I used to take the photo and post it.
