For some reason we called them “English racers” - then later “10 speeds”.

True story - I got one as a gift for a family birthday party when I was five.  I unwrapped it and my uncle Tim offered to launch it for me. I said sure.

He pumped it up to the max in our back yard and shot it off, launching it about 50 feet up, where it abruptly turned and stuck itself right into the side of a tree.
