    Sucks.

"Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community [...] but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It's the invasion of the idiots."

...and 17% are Trump supporters that don't know what the hell "Net Neutrality" is.

If an NFL players suspension goes through the Federal court system, surely this will be litigated all the way to the Supreme Court.

Will be interesting to see how quickly any ISP's will take advantage of the situation.

My guess is they will all tread very lightly knowing that there will be a lot of focus on them looking for any egregious behavior.

  • Pissed that it's gotten this far, but no surprise that the FCC voted as it did, down party lines.  But this ain't over. There will be well funded lawsuits to challenge this ruling.

Maybe just in the short term, but once the big boys are able to make cutting the cord less viable and they can get back to profits, the economy will soar and it will rain down money on everyone who can then go start new businesses and buy stuff.

    FWIW,

I've got a base level service. $20/mo for 2 Gb. on cellular. Unlimited via land line for $34, but 2 Gb  takes at least 8 min and up to 15, assuming it doesn't fail mid way. (Before retirement, my desktop was 1 Gb/sec) Via cellular, only about 3 min for the same, but there goes the whole month.

I can go to Walgreens, Office Depot, etc, buy a 32 Gb SSD drive for maybe $12, and use priority US mail for $6+ to transfer the data overnite.

So kiddees, back to snail mail. Quite secure, and the media will be useful many times.  Not good for "Gotta have it now!" but if you want to get a Tb of data, say the whole of your families memorabilia, to a loved one, way cheaper than the glorious 'net.

I do.  Some of the telecoms where blocking certain types of traffic, like bit torrent, and other services from competitors were slowed down, there are plenty of documented issues.  The telecoms would come back and say there were just testing something or another.

Next time around, they will have a law giving express permission to offer tiered services.  So netflix might have to pay more to the ISPs because they compete with the ISPs services.  Netflix will have to pay more to get back what they're losing in bandwidth.  Price will be passed on to the consumer.
    So more time for chill?
    Love you bro!
  • We are not consumers of the internet. We are the products of the internet.

What Google, Facebook, and most other big internet companies have in common is that they are free because they make money by just having us here.

Think of AOL in the early days of the internet, they were our email, our news, our entertainment and so on. A one stop internet shop if you will, and we were fine with it.  The internet didn't end at AOL, but 99% of the stuff you cared about what there.

Worst case scenario we go back to that. Or maybe we are already there? Whens the last time you spent time on the internet without using Google? (or Chrome?), or Facebook?  Without Net Neutrality we will likely be steered in the direction that will make us the most lucrative product for these internet companies.  The cost will not be transferred to us, we will just be blinded to go to the places that make them the most money just for having us there.....

    ....I think....
